Am I wasting time?

Hi everyone,

As you can tell, I am VERY new to detecting, so I have a "newbie" question to ask. I live in Columbia, SC.....some of you have heard of the Civil War.....well we started it :) .

I have just moved to a new construction neighborhood and they have cleared about 200 acres of forest for the new phase of building. Nothing special about this land.....it was just trees about 15 miles from downtown.

My question is this.....do you think there is any point to detecting this land for relics, or is it just wasting time. I have found about 20 nails and a razor blade so far. Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Jim

Jreamy,

never know what you will find.

Have you done any research on the area?

Never saw a woods that I could not have a good time detecting in.

I would detect the heck out of the area.

As long as they did not put any fill in yet I would think the area would hold more than nails. Nails means

something was going on at one time in the area.

Being new have you spent some time in parks and public places getting to know your machine?

have a good un.............

and enjoy yourself when your out there, that what it's all about.

If it's land, and you can walk on it, I guarentee that there is something worth finding!! Especially seeing as how there is 200 acres, on the east coast where white settlers first came. I would be out there right now..... speaking of.... I gotta go. See Ya, and good luck!!!!

You won't know until you take a look. Even if I try to research an area and can't find anything in the area I want to hunt, I still put the coil to the ground for the true test... I have, on two seperate occasions, worked parks for days only to hit a hot spot where I find good stuff in just one small part of the park and nowhere else. With 200 acres there is bound to be at least a few good spots.

I would say there is definetly good stuff to be found there! Are the nails square or round? if they are square you have an older area mot likely :) my woods is less than 200 acres and its been a year now and i still find stuff :o It will take you years to clean all the goodies out of that woods prolly ;)

It's never a waste of time. I have made some good discoveries here in Charleston S.C. hunting wooded areas around the city and barrier islands. Good luck and Good hunting. trk5capt...

Only if you need to find a lot every time out. I know of a place near me. It is next to an old plantation. Good find are found all over the 5 acre park area. It has been hunted over 50 times easy, a friend goes there once a month and last month found a 3 cent piece, in the area I had been hunting earlier.
You will seem to get better results simply by fine tuning the way you hunt over time. Good luck, keephunting.
