Japanese. 1 sen.

I'll try to translate the date. Could be WWII era.

Could be Showa 16 which = 1941, but your pics are too poor to be sure.

These coins were made of aluminum during the war to save on other precious metals.

They still had 1 yen coins when I was there 10 years after the war.

Were they made of aluminum?

Yes, or some sort of very light metal. At that time it was 360 yen to the dollar, so the coin was worth about a third of a cent. I brought some home and made a jangly bracelet for my girl friend, she married somebody else and life goes on.

Thank god they didn't make these coins out of silver, or you would have to be a very laidback guy to say "life goes on" in that case...

If it is Showa 16 (1941) than you have one of 1,016,620,734 minted. They are 100 percent aluminum. Because they made so many, the value is only about 30 cents. They were made for 3 years (1941-1943). Definitely a war coin. One interesting thing about all Japanese war time coins is that instead of reading 日本 (Japan) on the coin, it reads 大日本 (Great Japan). You can see that above the horizontal line indicating one. All war time coins are marked in this way.
