Royal Palm Beach, FL
Detector(s) used
MineLab CTX3030
Garrett Infinium LS,
Garrett AT Pro,
Gray Ghost Amphibian Headphones,
Garrett Pin-Pointer AT,
RTGBB6tip Scoop
Primary Interest:
Beach & Shallow Water Hunting
When this item sounded off on my Infinium LS, it nearly blew my headphones off! Was about 16" deep in 3' of salt water. One of the most unusual "What's It's" I've ever found. It measures 8-1/2"L x 2-1/8"W x 1"T at the widest point. It's also slightly curved over its length.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jerry

A WILD GUESS, IT MAY BE A PTO TUBE OF OF AN OLD PLANE. (?)

MARION

I was initially thinking some kind of boat rail section since it has drain holes along the bottom edge and such good aluminum welding on the "post".

One thing is for sure, it's the result of a collision of some sort, wave action didn't do THAT to it!

It also looks like it was cut with a torch across the section by the post. Appears to have been anodized white when new.

I graduated college in Boca Raton. Florida Atlantic University is located on an old military air field. I haven't been there for some time but the runways were still there when I went there.

Some of the runways are still present, now turned into parking lots.
From Google Earth, you can also still make out where the earlier runways were positioned, generally speaking.
Obviously, the campus has encroached on them quite a bit over the years.

As for the mystery item, a few thoughts:
Doubtful a PTO tube. No numbers (and you know they like to number EVERYTHING), plus the welding looks very crude for aircraft.
Might be part of a boat railing (?)
What about part of a BBQ gas burner (or similar), but I think these are mostly stainless (?)
Maybe part of a lawn water sprinkler, possibly homemade?

Looks like a handrail or siderail of a boat.

Broken beach chair sounds good. I was just looking at a high quality broken chair and I noticed the same kind of interior pieces for strength. The holes may be for the fabric and the steels screws either came out or rusted away? or not. just guessing

Actually...
I am changing my guess...

Piece of a lawn sprinkler that does the fountain dealio spread.

Perhaps similar to ... but not limited to... this...

I agree with aluminum chair frame, the holes shown are screw holes.

I really don't think it qualifies as an "artifact " except in the broadest sense.

If it was made by man, it is an artifact.
I dont mean this in a bad way but toss it in the scrap bucket. its most likely a modern era broken piece of a lawn chair, boat railing, lawn sprinkler etc.

Metal detectorists do a service cleaning the beach and surf.
