Digout on wwII battlefield,looks like painted german army colour "feldgrau".Any ideas?

Where you found it might help narrow it down. Doubtful you'll find much German exploded ordnance in Canada for example...

I don't immediately recognize it as Wehrmacht or SS field gear, but it could just be something I haven't seen. If it's German, there will be marks stamped in it, such as serial numbers and Waffenamts (little eagle and swastikas)

Hmmmm...... I've looked through several references and I can't find anything like it.... you might want to post it on the Wehrmacht Awards forum, I collected German gear from WW2 for several years, and I have a pretty good knowledge of German field gear and weapons, but I defer to their expertise at identifying all manner of odd items...
