I went to see it and took a tour today. I placed my fingers in 236 year old British musketball holes in a house that was involved in a skirmish. It was fantastic seeing this mansion that is certainly basic by todays standards. 4 rooms, two stories. Gov. Benjamin Williams lived there after Alston and he was a Patriot as well. Very historic house not only to NC but to America and it's founding. If you have the chance, visit and see this place. The views are amazing, simply a gorgeous tract of land.

I asked about that and the guide said he once tried to install a period hitching post he had restored and the State refused him. He said the paperwork involved and the archeologists he would have to deal with made it just not worth it. He said he isn't allowed to sift a teaspoon of dust at that site. It is on the National registry and is Revolutionary War related, one of the few in NC. They can't even use radar to find the outhouses.
