Alright, here's another one. Can anyone date this buckle? (1880's farm house)

I went back to the 1880's farm house again...
I decided to "clean" all of the iron out so I can start hitting those deep coin targets. About 3 hours into it, I dug a horse shoe and about 5" away I hit this buckle at about 6" deep. It's made of Iron (I beleive) and the rust is REALLY deep...
Here's the top...

Here's the bottom...

The side...

It's approx. 2 3/4" by 2 1/2".

I really appreciate the help folks...thanks in advance!!!

I'd go with some kind of horse tack buckle, dating it is nearly impossible though I'd think. You may be able to find out when that style first started being made. I'd guess within 10 years before the farmstead was settled, to maybe a few years before it was abandoned.

That's the problem...
The place is still inhabited.
I was just hoping against hope that someone might recognize the design (as basic as it is) and give me an idea...

Tom,

Try running electrolysis on it and see if you get any detail. Modern Miner has some great directions to do this. If you can't find it, PM me and I will send you the directions he sent me.
