Wasn't able to metal detect this weekend but I was walking my dog on a trail in the woods and happened to notice some stuff at the bottom of a steep embankment. I walked down and sure enough it was an old bottle dump. My excitement turned to sadness as I began to dig into the cobalt blue, amber, purple and other colored glass and realized that someone had smashed them all. I'm not a bottle collector but some of these were beautiful and old. I took one picture of an old poison jug. There were several similar crock type jugs mixed in the bottles. Sorry this prob wasn't worth sharing but since I couldn't md this is all I got :-)

What a shame. I wonder if there are bottles below the top surface that you could recover? Maybe bring a rake with you next time.
My Dad took me to a spot in Indiana out in the country where people would toss out there bottles along the road. We dug up some great old bottles back into the 1800's. Worth a try.
That poison bottle was a neat find.
Thanks for the post.

That's a crime. People who smash bottles should be locked away. But are you sure they were purposely broken?

I can't say for sure but every single bottle was smashed and I would think that there would have been a few intact bottles out of the hundreds that were there. I will def go back and dig down. I tried with my hands but that didn't last long. Decided I could wait before I ended up needing stitches :-)

Definitely, gloves are always good. Show us if you find anything.

It probably the same type of people that turn over head stones, brainless! There still may be something there intact .

The bottles were probably used for target practice by someone. Probably a .22 or some kids with BB guns...????

I'm sure you're right. I'm definitely going to go back and see if anything deeper survived. Maybe I will get lucky.
