that's what I'd wonder.

Being this happened in 1912 there were no detectors. just "witching Sticks"

Actually there were metal detectors back then, they actually used the first one trying to locate the bullet from Abraham Lincoln's assassination. However highly doubtful one was used in this particular issue. Certainly something to look into.
