I found something like that too, but didn't know what it was. What did they seal with them?

RickRobinson yours appears to be the chicago michigan lakeshore railroad in opperation between 1869-1878 running from New Buffalo to St.Joseph and then later further up the coast it later became the Chicago and West Michigan railroad these pieces are somewhat collectable to the right person so yours is at least 131 years old. They sealed boxcars with wire and a lead seal that they stamped with a pair of pliers with the initials of the railroad company to ensure that the contents of the shipment were not tampered with during transit

Cool find on the lead seal with the wire still intact, I've never found one like that!
