When we first started hunting my wife thought this would be a great Christmas Gift to me. At that time we had a TV station on the old big dish where things were actually free. There was a show that auctioned different things off such as agates , different stones , cut stone bookends and some "indian artifacts". She purchased this pipe, even with a COA (hmmmm) and this pipe was told to have come out of a shelter in virginia . Almost a black hardstone with gold flakes. The Center hole is very "round" but I cannot see any tool marks. It also tapers to the bottom. You can see where the stem has been "broken". Now, after watching this site long enough to know that opinions are very easy to come by sometimes.......... Let me have em :) . I have always had my own. And don't ask me to find the COA , although it's possible ........... Afterwards I may tell you what she paid for it.................. The stone is not as rough as it appears in the first two pictures, it is rather smooth as the other pictures show.

Thanks OLH......... Looks like a possibility . 127 views and only one comment, sure would like to have more information on this. I have no idea on material even.

That pipe is nice, as far as the truth goes...never happen, but, man I wish it could. Might get a some wild opinions. Looks like a white mans pipe early 1800's????
Either way, it is pretty cool...

Technologies

pipestone comes in colors...also other soft rocks come in different colors...
looks good...use a loupe insie the stem to look for tool marks please.

Have to get ahold of one Pippin , or better get some one else to look at it as I am half bilnd in my dominant eye. That rules out rifle scopes , camera eyepieces and prolly a loupe. I never believed the story and always wondered about it. For what she paid for it I would be tickled to death if was near as old as suggested. No one is going to hurt my feelings with "opinions". As I said in the beginniing, I have always had my own opinion about it :) ................. Hey Outlawheart............. Got a Loupe ?

I hope it is what you think, but an other option would be an end off a golf club- an old one.I sincerely hope to be proved wrong!
Just my tuppence worth!

If you want the truth vs. your COA, you might need to find it.
I see a pipe, is it real, sure it is, but define real... Is it NA, i dont think so.
Could it have came from a shelter in VA, sure it could have. This is where the problem lies.
Kudos for your wife to have enough interest to buy it either way.

JMO just from what I can see, I don't think it is Native American made or very old, it could be from late 1800 to early 1900. I say this because what I see in the stem hole, way to small for a NA to make, the bowl is almost to perfect and it looks almost polished on the inside. But there is always a first for everything.

Asked my wife yesterday and she said "Of course I know where that COA is"........... is not a coa, is a bill of sale (and yes I know the difference :) ).....scanned it into comp a can barely read it as it was printed off a dot matrix printer in 1997. Like most of the commentors I always had a hard time believing it was a NA Piece. But the receipt does say " artifact/stone pipe/from virginia/woodland age / with display case. Of course I realize I could sale you a ford and give you a receipt for a dodge. I will try to get the receipt darkened up where I can at least post it. For all I know it was made in mexico in 1996, but I wont mention it to my wife :) ....... With gifts,it's the thought that counts. ( she paid 65 and 10 shipping for it ) I Still like it, but since we all agree not NA, I would not be hurt if this thread was deleted, or not :)

Might have to bring you that piece for you look at next time I see you OLH......... I think wescan0005.jpg agree that it's real and old but not real old :) ........ Here is the original receipt ( Not COA ) and maybe you can make out in lower left the description ( for what it was worth ) Hard to read with that old dot matrix printer

All I can tell you is that it does not look to be a historic era "production" pipe. It looks to be a hand made "one off", but whether it was made by pre-historic peoples, or be early colonists/ Americans, I haven't a clue.

At one time I would have said it's not NA, but now in my old age I've seen some stuff Aztec's made, and there were some wondrous things
made by primitive people. I have no idea how they could have drilled that small hole in the stem, but if I said "never happen," someone would
feed it to me. No matter, it's a neat pipe, and your wife's heart is in the right place.

Can't tell much from the pics but when you say it has gold flecks I am reminded of a Gold Star Black or Galaxy Black granite quarried in India.

It is highly doubtful that it is a N/A Pipe as I have been studying them for 3 decades and can not place this style.
