Real keeper if not discharged . Pic looks like the primer has been struck by a firing pin . Misfire recovered so old is unique .

That casing would be brass. It was probably a heavy load, buckshot, used for large game. At one time a lot of police forces used all brass shells in their cruiser shotguns.

item was fragile and broke apart upon recovery.

cleaning of course i thought all plugged w mud. imagine

my suprise when wadding and lead pellets came out.

i have saved them.

does item have collector value ?

Great find on the shell!I found one 20 yr's and wish I still had it.

Very unique find. I've seen all brass shotgun shells in museums!

All the best,

Lanny

I have found 2, sold one on eBay but I forgot what I got for it. Good find, HH

Years and years ago they were made of brass for reloading purposes and because no one figured out about how to use paper for a while. The Navy used them during WWII because the moisture makes the paper swell. Then plastic came along and made the paper/brass shells obsolete...d2

I have one. Its not a dug one but one that my grandfather had in some stuff.
Also had a CW pistol bullet mold but my uncle stole it. :angry5:

I have dug probably a hundred of them, never an unfired one though!Neat!!!

10 gauge, could still buy them when I was a kid.. likely a long barrelled goose gun..

Deathhare, not meaning to go off topic but I feel your pain. When my grandfather died I couldn't make it back for the funeral (deployed in the military) or the reading of the will. As the will was read regarding my receiving his old pocket watch (not worth much, just something I had asked for to remember him by) my uncle (whose share had already been read) picks it up off the lawyers desk and walks out with it. Everyone was too stunned to say anything. I understand he sold it to pay for his return airlines ticket. Go figure. At least unc couldn't steal my memories.

Never dug one myself but would love to someday. Cool dig. :icon_thumright:
