Albuquerque Mystery Rock

While perusing the old pictures in the Palace of the Governors archives (Santa Fe, NM) I found this:

Seems to be obviously a church marker with a rifle sight for the next monument. Those are probably the Sandia Mtns in the background (which means this rock is most likely gone), but it's hard to be sure.

Any opinions?

I think it just means the padre found 12 square inches of shade out there...an sat down long enough to carve a monument to their own mortality...
