Baltimore Co. borders on the Chesapeake Bay and navigable waters start at the port of Baltimore. This has much to do with another "relic" from what I've come to refer to as the "colonial" rec field, where in the recent past I've dug five halfpenny coins that date form the 1700s. Today's dug flat button is a little older than the coins, and is my best dug military button to-date. In fact, this is an early U.S. Navy coat button, dating c. 1795 - 1810. It has an eagle standing on flat ground with a shield with fouled anchor by eagle's right wing. This is an exact match to Albert's NA6. Being manufactured by Cairn & Co. of Birmingham, England, one source places this company as late 18th, early 19th century. It was the first target I dug this morning.

Here it is compared to a specimen with much of its original detail.

Thanks Professor! Hoping a visit to the local historical society may shed some light on the past for this site.

Thanks Whyme! It's imprint was in the plug and there it was at the bottom of the hole.

Thanks Trezurehunter! Thankful for 1) having a site like this to detect and 2) enough detail on the obverse to make an id.

Thanks Inspector! We had a cold, windy start to the day, but found lots of clad and a couple relics, too.

Thanks Carolina Tom! Will continue to explore this site for more history.

Thanks "D"! Pretty amazing to trace the history of this coat button....from England to the U.S. and on to someone in our fledgling Navy.
