Have a question concerning finds. I have a lot of “no idea what it is” shaped items from both surf and turf detecting over the past 3-4 yrs. I’m certain 99.9% of the items are aluminum in various states of crumple/melt, however I’d hate to throw away that .1% that was silver. Any easy ways to test (don’t say weight because silver is light to me and unseen dirt in an aluminum ball adds weight) the difference?

You can always buy an acid test kit off of Amazon for about $15 to be positive, but you can usually tell by the color of the oxidation if it's been in the ground for a while. Silver tarnishes a blackish color. Aluminum stays shiny longer, but oxidized a white powdery color when it does oxidize.

The majority suspected aluminum found are most likely melted aluminum from fires.
