There was an article in the Naples News about a long lost hunting camp made from a WW2 B-24 bomber. http://www.naplesnews.com/news/2010/aug/28/perspective-bear-island-airplane-camp/

I believe I have found the location in the Big Cypress swamp. In fact Im almost certain of it. I will go back and take some pics to compare with the pictures from the news. Ill post them next week when I get back. I only come home once a week for supplies.

Re: Airplane Camp...The Sequel

http://www.naplesnews.com/news/2011/jan/24/letters-editor-jan-25-2011/

Maybe I should post in Todays Finds lol. :dontknow: I have been camping for the past month in the Big Cypress Preserve. With nothing to do after work, I like to hike around. The airplane camp location is overgrown and the plane appears to be gone but maybe something remains. There appears to be some metal and the foundations remain intact. Ill bring my camera this time and post pics next week if anyone is interested..

Back in the 1980's when I was in Northern Scotland, there was this Youth Hostel that had a WW2 Lancaster boomer out in a field that they used as pub,it was missing the wings, but it was really neat.

Heres the pics. There are 2 foundations. The first pic is for the nose cone, the second foundation is for the fuselage. You can see the U shape. The area is overgrown and there doesnt appear to be any remains of the B-24. If I found anything, I would not have been allowed to remove it because its in a National Preserve but I was just curious if any airplane parts remained. All I found was trash.

Thanks for the correction. I searched around but dont see anything of value. Cleaned up some of the trash. Found a well head which may come in handy for water.

Scrappers musta got that plane and hauled it off! :laughing7:
Well, were you at least able to remove the trash!? :o
I never got to stay at that camp. That's more up toward Immokelee, off 29, and that other road.
Guess I hung out over off L-23 too long.
Hopes and best wishes, for your journeys, in and out of, my backyard. Thanks for the pic's.
I'd love to see more.

I removed some trash myself and Eddie Cox from the Everglades Cleanup Coalition volunteered to remove the rest.
I suggested to him not to remove the concrete without permission or to leave the concrete as a curiousity attraction.. http://www.facebook.com/EvergladesCleanupCoalition

I'm just a little jealous. :-\ I ain't out there, too.
I almost feel like I'm gonna hafta play 20 questions with ya, like in,
where is this place, and who am I? :laughing7:

Tom T. is that you? I thought you was running airboats, for Billie Swamp Safari? Still got the cabin?
Well I gues not with that pad and camper, still looks like home, though.
That truck sure looks familiar :icon_scratch:

We were over there picking mangos, at DOT property, years ago, big cargo carrier buzzed overhead, just above the tree lines. Scared us all to death, as we kept waiting for a crash sound, it never came, thank goodness.

Its a Florida Game Commission truck. The picture is in Bear Island from last April. The camper is an old Scotty. Thanks for posting.

Does Billie Swamp Safari pay good LOL? The reservation is not far from my property. I hear Billie is the chief Indian again.

I don't know bout tangling with a soveirgn nation, possibly no workers comp! LOL!

Tell ya a story, I can't remember if it was Billie or not, I think it was.
One of the boys on the job, was dating an Indian girl.(I ain't gonna name no names) She used to work at one of the Cig trailers, on 441. By old Candlelight MHP(now known as Seminole Casino).
He took her off the reservation, and they set up house.
It took less than a month, for the Chief to knock on their door.
He told that Indian girl, she wanted to keep getting her monthly check, she better get her butt back to the reservation, and kick that white boy to the curb!
Honey, she left skid-marks, running over him!

You know how much money they get a month? You may wanna apply for "Indian"! :laughing7:
And I ain't even joking!

I hear a family of 5 gets about $40,000.oo per month. :dontknow: Free housing on the res, dental and medical, no taxes.

You be hearing 'bout right! Give or take a few grand, depending.........

I think, I may put MY application in, on-line!? LOL! :laughing7:

Hey bigchunter, you may wanna keep a check-in, from time to time, too! Like we doing, with out west folks.
I'd hate to think that big ole Skunk Ape, gotta hold of ya, out there! :munky2:
Actually, he's a friend of ours, no lie, I had him trained, but then someone gave him beer, and he was able to escape!
(or to think of you, running at night, no lights, hello! That ain't a joke, btw)

But, that's another story! :laughing7: I'm waiting, for an on-line response, right now, from a few tribes! :laughing7:

I dont work the summer Pat. I wont go back to work for 2 months. (August) :(

Heres a sign in the swamp in front of an Indian house. I have mixed feelings about the sign but in a way its funny. Someone needs to tell them Bush is no longer the Big Chief and I guess they think we all come from England.
