Ain't Nuttin' But A Button - "NE Plus Ultra"

My boss is out of town this week, so I hit the farm at lunchtime. ;D Hotter than blazes here today, so it was a quickie. I found three things:
1) What looks to be either a metal shoe heel, or the back of a padlock. Any guesses?

2) A small whats-it. It may be a trumpet for a mouse, or a CW hearing aid. :D Any guesses?

3) My best find was another old brass button (20mm). It is stamped "NE Plus Ultra" on the back, and also has what looks to be an eagle stamped into the back.
I could use some help IDing this one.
I just bought a new button book (pictured) in hopes of not having to ask for ID help all of the time, but still don't see this one listed. Mine is a 20mm button, not a 16mm as listed in the book.
Help please. ??? ::)
Thanks for looking & drink plenty of water out there.
-MM-
P.S. Only two ticks today. :'(

In Tice's Dating Buttons book, a very similar button is listed, and dates pre 1830's, it is not the NA-71, nor military, it is civilian. I believe it is another one made by manufacturers using the Eagle as a partriotic theme to help contribute to that buttons popularity. Nice find, not too many seen, I found mine many years ago.

Don,
Thank you for that info. I'm very pleased with the button, military or not. I just get a kick finding things this old. Now if I could just find coins that old. ;D
Have a great week,
MM

Thanks Civil.
This one came from the farm I've been working for about 4-5 months now. I think I have about 25 buttons now from that farm. I think I need to sit down and label them all now.

Sweet finds, keep digging there is more there.

Re: Ain't Nuttin' But A Button - "NE Plus Ultra"

It's in great shape, Doug!

Way to go! I still can't believe you detected in the noon day heat!

Congratulations!

I believe your "mouse trumpet" is a collar/shirt stud. Collars used to be seperate of the shirts and very stiffly starched and a stud set was used in place of buttons (often with matching cuff-links).

That, or maybe Stonewall Jackson's tongue stud.

Dave,
I only work the shade spots. Had an occasional breeze which helped too. :D

Thanks Charlie. The tongue stud was my third guess. ;D

Nice relics MM!
Looks like the candlestick by Mr. Mustard in the library.......

Keep safe and keep diggin'...

Re: Ain't Nuttin' But A Button - "NE Plus Ultra"

A great find MM, I love those old buttons.

Re: Ain't Nuttin' But A Button - "NE Plus Ultra"

Nice button MM. One thing I have noticed on this forum - those who find old buttons find old coins. The other thing I have observed is that everyone finds buttons but me! :P ::) Oh I have found one or two but not much more. Anyway, good job and keep it going. You still have plenty of blood left for those ticks. ;) ;D :D

Hey Modern-Miner,
Interesting stuff!

That sure looks like a steel heel plate; maybe someone was dancing and lost it??

That "mouse trumpet" is actually a "FLEA STOOL", I've found a lot of those the last few weeks.Dang fleas, I can't get them to stop drinking my beer! ;)

The button is ElNeato!

Thanks for sharing!

Great button. I enjoy finding buttons

Re: Ain't Nuttin' But A Button - "NE Plus Ultra"

Neat finds MM! Since everything else has been IDed maybe I can help with the padlock back, a heel plate would have more holes for the nails. HH, Mike

Re: Ain't Nuttin' But A Button - "NE Plus Ultra"

And by the way, I found a 1956 Wheatie, a musket ball, a live 270 remington round and a modern spigot on my lunch hunt today. HH, Mike

I know this is an old post but I just found it on Google whilst looking up MY "Ne Plus Ultra" button that I found this morning. Mine is neither 16mm nor 20mm, it's in between at 18mm. The timeframe sure fits, as it comes from the banner field. Will post pics Monday after I get those microscope pics everyone seems to enjoy.

LOL. I was wondering how my 6 yr old post came up. :tongue3:
Congrats,
