All, dug this tiny 2-piece button near a farm house that has was built in about 1800 and occupied most of the time since then. It is complete and measures about 9/16” in diameter and 3/8” tall. No maker’s marks appear on the reverse side.
Given its size and decorative pattern, I assume it was from a woman’s garment. The pattern appears to be a mix of checkerboard in some areas and tiny dots elsewhere. This pattern is missing from some of the edge which indicates it is a thin layer on some base metal. For the time being I haven’t cleaned the front of the button, because the dirt helps show the pattern.
Before posting, I looked at about 400 button threads on TNet. The closest match is “19th century Two piece Button”. While the pattern is not the same, the fact that the pattern is missing at the edge like the button I found suggests it too is a thin layer on some base metal. That button was given the dates late 1830s-40 and 1840-60. Is that the age of the button I found? If not, what age is it?
