Are we sure it's a drill bit?

Looks like a bit to a gimlet. Mid 19th to mid 20th century(?)

All, good point. I'm not that familiar w/ carpentry tools so it could be a gimlet bit. Is it possible to narrow the age range (i.e. last half of 19th or first half of 20th century)?

The mounting end is square tapered to go in a brace and bit. Brace and bits go back a long way. Gary
