Found it 7 inches down in front yard of 1840s farm house. I think it is pewter. No markings. Two holes on top hemisphere. One slit with round ends on bottom. Still rings like new.
Cool bell, I found my first two a few weeks ago, I wish there was a better site for these bells found in the US, according to this site, mine date from the 1600-1700's, which I have a hard time believing.
I found my first in tacked bell, at an old home site. Mine is like yours, and it still rings.
I can't say about the date. But,i would like to now my self if these bells where being made in the early
or late 1800s.
Bronze with high zinc or tin content, I found a bell like that with gray color. Pewter would be more flaky after being underground. I'm guessing late 1700's.
