made of clay ? --if so the smaller the bowl generally speaking the older the pipe --as time went on and growing tobacco was more common the price dropped on tobacco and the bowls became larger as folks used larger amounts -- and pipes in general became "bigger" overall ---the pipes stems became thicker the draw hole in the pipes stem was also larger
