Ag-ed metal detectors

A five year old Whites in good condition should be perfectly acceptable for hunting. It might not have all the bells and whistles of a new machine, but it will still be a great way to step up to a better hunter. Even today, some hunters prefer a machine without all the gadgets.

Good luck with the "new" Whites!

I bought my White's XLT 8 years ago .... used! It still works like a charm (although a few months ago I had to replace the primary coil).

Go for it!! But check it out first to ensure everything works OK.

Just remember to be a smart shopper. Do a search to see how much this model is currently selling for. Several forums have classified sections in which you can do a search to see what that model was offered for. E-Bay the same way using the completed search. Dealers are a bit higher on used machines. I actually prefer paying a bit more from dealers if I can't try out the machine myself as I know it will be in excellent condition.

My 2 cents

Sounds like I might even do better with the older one,
I love old things :D

Heck, my newest machine is 16 years old and I prefer to hunt with my 20 year old detector.

The main difference in old machines and newer models it the coming of the digital age. The newer ones might have a bit more accurate discriminatin but most really good hunters work a lot in the all metal mode anyway. Some of the "modern" machines have been around for several years and not much has changed, IE: XLT, GTI2500, etc. I'd look for one that you can still get different size coils for or that already have them and one that is still currently being made or has just recently ben discontinued. Also, you will need a manual and most dealers have them available, some even on line. monty
PS. I am predicting some really inovative equipment coming on the market really soon and you could always trade it back for a newer model if you buy from a reputable dealer.
