After rain there's "Rainbows"

I sure am glad I decided to go hunting this morning instead of getting some work done. This one took my breath away when I realized what it was. I spotted just a corner of it and pulled on it a little. When it didn't budge, I started to clear away the ground around and tug a little, clear some more and tug some more . . . . .

Finding just the points and the bone bead would have made a great morning.

I agree "wow" I really do like pottery even if it is broken pieces. That is one big pottery shard keep an eye out you might find more pieces. Nice piece !!! By the other artifact's are really nice too.

Re: After rain there's "Rainbows"

Thanks all, wouldn't it be something if I could find more of it. I have found some fairly large shards of other pots recently but nothing with the detail of this one.

Re: After rain there's "Rainbows"

T Witko!! first off very fine artifacts, wish i could find pottery in my area. others may remember where you are from but i can not, need location with avatar. how close to pot was the points found? looks like your pot was appox, 13 1/2 inches across that would sure be a big pot. your shard looks to be almost 4 inches tall and looks like it is starting to expand in fourth photo. YES that would be a big pot! Terry

Re: After rain there's "Rainbows"

I had to come back and take another look, that section of rim would nearly go half way around the top. :icon_thumright: Nice !!!

Re: After rain there's "Rainbows"

Re: After rain there's "Rainbows"

Hey Steve, good idea showing the measurement it gives you an idea of the size, that was a big pot. The size of those shards sure does beat the quarter and half dollar size ones we find around here.

Re: After rain there's "Rainbows"

the rest of it more than likely is there.

Re: After rain there's "Rainbows"

If is is an erosional site look into the bank or where the artifacts are spilling out. If it is a surface - down erosional site scratch around. If it is collected by several people ask around, there may be other large chunks in other hands. Large is good, the small stuff with eroded edges is nearly impossible to reconnect.

Re: After rain there's "Rainbows"

Nice "rainbow" design on the that sherd. I have a few of those myself from North Dakota and even have one with an "owl face" on it. We have lots of Pottery here, but nothing that compares to the designs from ND.

Re: After rain there's "Rainbows"

Are you sure the rest of or at least some more of that pot is not in the ground where you found that piece? The edges look sorta "fresh broke" in the picture. Great find...d2

Re: After rain there's "Rainbows"

Wow... It would have been a trip to see the whole pot as it was at one time! The shard is awesome anyway, though... It almost looks as though the broken piece might have been "reworked" into a scraper of some sort using the broken side and the front seems to have a darker spot right where a thumb might hold it for that purpose (oil from hand burning hotter?). It's definitely been through a fire or two. Great find! :headbang:
