"Afraid" to dump?

O.K. I posted my finds from my first four boxes of halves in another thread. What I did not mention was that I had put off doing boxes because I was afraid that I would be making enemies at my chosen dump bank. I was so worried that I would hear something like "Oh no, not another crazy coin roll hunter!"

Well, the tellers at my dump bank were very kind and friendly. I guess I was worried for nothing. I have to remmeber that in tough times, customer service is important.

So, my question, were others fearful of "making enemies" or anything along those lines when you first started CRH? Did this initially keep you from ordering coins in large quantities?

yes. And still treat it with timidity, so I don't overdo it.

Re: "Afraid" to dump?

It would be better if you could have more than 1 dump bank. That way you don't 'wear out your welcome' and are able to do more boxes. Treats every now and then for tellers who work at your dump bank is always a good investment. Rumor has it that chocolate is a favorite. : ) Heck, take some to your pick-up bank too. It certainly can't hurt. Good Luck!

Ha too funny.

My rules of thumb: Moderate your dump amount and if you start searching a high volume, try not to show up at the same branch in two consecutive weeks.

I'm doing good if I dont show up in two consecutive days :laughing7:
I hit each of my dump banks at least twice a week, usually more. I do spread it out so I'm not dumping more than $1K in halves at a time at any one dump bank. They really dislike changing those heavy bags.

The head teller at my buy bank was really upset when I showed up today. Some guy bought 2 boxes of halves and paid for most of it with $830 in dump halves. I alleviated the problem by buying his dumps, will go through them first then dump them tomorrow when I make my dumps runs. She was real happy that I took them off of her hands. I told her any time that happens I'll take them so she doesn't get stuck with them.

Re: "Afraid" to dump?

Dumped THREE boxes of halfs on a teller at my dump bank who DELIGHTED in letting me know that she picked through all the good stuff ( This was when I was going to use them as a buy bank).....She was snippy about it, so that bank became our dump bank, only I used to dump one box at a time....now she's gotta deal with THREE.

C'est la vie.

Now she gets to cherry-pick her way through enough halves to keep her busy for a week :tongue3:

Re: "Afraid" to dump?

I only dump at TD banks, re-rolling was too time consuming for the amount that I want to do. I'm on pace to do $50K in halves this month. Takes me 45 minutes per box if I re-roll and 15 minutes if I just open and edge check. Then add in the time it was taking me to dump on tellers, it just wasn't worth it. The banks I was dumping at wouldn't take the boxes, they made me line them up on the counter top so they could count them out and then bag the rolled coins. Only time I'll re-roll at this point is if a teller angers me and I just wanna give them some extra work.

Even if they were pleasant to you this time, wait until you keep coming back... It'll get tiring. They have a job to do, they are getting paid to take your dump.

Re: "Afraid" to dump?

I dump anywhere from $200 - $750 a DAY at my bank and they don't have a problem with it. They have the self serve counter so all they get is the receipt. It's no inconvenience to them at all.

... Until they have to empty/service the counter every single day. When I started out doing volume, I would be kind and spread the dumps around a couple of days a week. Besides being a pain in the arse, I got to thinking, "If processing the dump is an unpleasant task for the teller, would I as a teller want to do the unpleasant task everyday of the week or would I rather bite the bullet once (a week/month) and be done with it for awhile?". I now only dump once a month. I push the limit of the dump per branch to the max of the reportable limit. One day with multiple branch stops and I'm done for the month.

Re: "Afraid" to dump?

I was at first, still a bit timid to be honest with you. Just like asking permission to detect on someone's property. First few times, nerves are wrecked. After that it is kinda second nature. Doug

Re: "Afraid" to dump?

i had a bank where the tellers were very rude, and i was just buying a few rolls of coins every now and then when i first started CRH'ing, so they came my automatic dump bank...i dont feel bad at all dumping there, at that bank as a whole because they are so rude, but i do feel bad for a few tellers who are SUPER sweet/nice, and go out of their way to help me. this is my main dump branch, but i have many more ive picked up along the way that i dump way less at. i also have a branch of the same bank who are SUPER RUDE, and all the tellers are this way, not one nice one in the lot, and once they told me i had to stop using their machine...i asked if i could reroll, and they begrudgingly said "FINE!"...i havent dumped there yet, im going to make them think their free of my nonsense, then one day i will literally show up with 20-30 boxes of rerolled zincolns, and make my deposit ;D hey, they deserve it...i would never pick up more than 1-2 boxes at a time from them, and never dump more that $500 before they shut me down on both (i didnt dump/pickup at the same time, they were my pickup bank, then became my dump bank, then said i couldn't use their counter anymore), and even tho i did such a small volume while still active there, they literally roll their eyes at me if i ask to buy like $10 in nickels...even if i need the change for business reasons...sorry for the long rant...keep it up and hh!

Re: "Afraid" to dump?

@ Theolog:

My advice is to: a) be nice to the tellers - buy them a box of donuts every once in a while; and b) find more dump banks, even if they are branches of the same bank. Many credit unions offer free coin changing, and if you can find one with a machine then the tellers have less to deal with every time you go there...and STILL be nice to them. No bank is obligated to change out the massive amount of coins that us CRHers go through, and it is people being rude, or dumping at the same bank where they buy coins (which is VERY rude) that cause banks to charge per roll or per box fees.

It is good that you feel uneasy about it - that means you have a conscience.

Re: "Afraid" to dump?

Someone up above said that something to the effect that in this economy the tellers need to be friendly...lol. I believe we have plenty of evidence that the economy is not what makes tellers friendly or unfriendly :help:. It is chocolate and cookies that make tellers friendly. :headbang:

What has always fascinated me is that coins/change/money/loans/etc is the business of banks. Why make a fuss about people bringing back coins? Its your BUSINESS to take money, to hold money, to change MONEY. Don't you WANT people to bring in all types of money? Don't you have the processing of money as your business and are setup with machines and people to do your business? Don't you have that process calculated and know what it costs you to handle that money?

Why would you NOT want to keep anyone and everyone who wants to walk in your door HAPPY to bring in any type of US money?

Make your customer happy and he might just leave some of that money IN YOUR BANK! :headbang:

I have a feeling that the tellers, who have the majority of interactions with the daily customers, are somewhat akin to federal bureaucrats who believe they have "jobs for life" and at some point, after working at that bank for 10 or 20 years, look upon their positions as being their "turf". They run the show and have no fear of upsetting a customer and losing their job.

Seems a bit backwards to me. But, thats just me. :dontknow:

Re: "Afraid" to dump?

What really surprised me was that the teller asctually said that my four boxes of Halves was not all that much. They have someone else who dumps even more that that on a regular basis. That alone helped my first experience with a major dump.

Re: "Afraid" to dump?

my bank became my sole dump bank because i was in there depositing my paycheck and i noticed 2 old silver dollars in her tray and i asked if i could buy them from her and she said that they are allready spoken for. i asked by who and she pointed at the merchant teller and said her. i was up set and told them it was wrong to hold them for another bank employee next time put them outa sight. and walked away.
now ill save my coins and dump there exclusively, my biggest dump was 2200 in a week, i could tell they didnt appreciate it and one of them asked my if i was done dumping, and i said no way i have tons of these coins left from my grandpa passing, a whole room full of them and some of them are reel old too... so hopefully they are taking all the time to search all my dumped coins. :laughing7:
