Hey there,

I was bottle digging and was surprised to find this object in one of my shovelfuls of dirt, what I think might be my second adze/celt. It looks like it was possibly broken at the back end. It looks like the same type of stone as my first one, which I found at a different location. It is about 3.5 inches long. Let me know what you think!

Thanks,

N

Man-made, for sure!
Thanks for side view.
Dimensions?
Basalt?
Great find! :icon_thumright:

Thanks for the reply! I'm not sure about the type of stone, but this is the first one I found, that looks fairly similar:

Cool also!
My suggestion is to go to local museum,
or an anthropological dept at a university,
and look at examples of the same, and note
the materials that they were made of.
Style often relates to date period made.

It could be either. Good find, regardless. Just nice to see a real artifact!

The first one you found is a Celt. Likely the last one is too. A celts bit is straight across, while an adze will have a curve to the bit.

If you found multiple celts in the same area....it's time to switch your priorities....nice finds for sure....some folks never find a Celt in their lifetime....

Thank you all for your helpful responses! I feel very fortunate to have found these. Every time someone says that even experienced hunters never find an adze/celt, I shake my head in disbelief. Here is my little collection of artifacts so far, all found while metal detecting or bottle digging. Other than the chert knife/hide scraper, these all look like the same type of stone. The three bottom objects are all from the same site. From that site I also have what I think might be a bear claw, and we don't have bears around here - at least not any more...

Thanks again!
