Hi Im Andy from the Uk. I understand that i am able to stay within the U.S. on a visitor/holiday for upto 3mths,
however i am now looking into planning a 2mth gold nugget hunting trip wich will also include panning metal detecting and basically working the shaw lines, in Alaska, or please feel free to also recommend ereas within Alaska or other States.
I fully understand this would not be a holiday for m, im willing to bust my gut for many many long gruelling hrs on a day to day basis, blood sweet & tears is my motto. im a very strong fit Guy & will move big heavy rocks all day if need be.
I have never travelled to the States before let alone go hunting for gold, & would really apprieciate Your advice in this erea of experience & knowledge.
Obviously plenty of researh into this on my behalf is crucial wich i thoroughly understand, but there is so uch to learn & so many channels i need to work through before all this is even slightly possible, such as
State Law
Permission from land/State owner, the do's & donts etc.
map reading-navigation & a complete undertanding of the erea i.e. weather-surroundings-wildlife (wich im very concerned about)
food. Do i hunt (for fish) or bring own supply's etc
Sleeping arangements, would it be advisable to use a tent or is there a more safe place to retire to, i.e outbuilding, is there places to rent at reasonable prices or would i provide own shelter,. What would You recommend?
Bears & Mousse i would again need to study/learn about possible encounters dos & donts. & weighing up the situation.
Would i need & what would be again recommended as last resort defense weapon/s?
Would i need a liscence for gun if this is whats advised,
How would i reach my destination to gold hunt, i.e local boat hire? vieacle hire? would i need to fly out to the destination?
what about communcation i.e a moby (cell phone) or do You use walki talki's
This has been a HUGE PASSION for me for may yrs since being a young child to go out & hunt for gold/prospecting.
i plan on using a Minelab gpx gold/nugget detector, also an excaliber also from minelab for water useage,
a pin pointer probe plus pans, & something to sort out the gold/specs from the dirt-gravel etc.
I would be very greatfull for Your advice & any help You may feel could & be of importance to me.
Failing this...Would there be Someone who would be or planning on a trip before the yr is out to hunt for gold & would consider
Me to join them,..Well if You dont ask You dont get.
Thanks for reading, and i very much look forward o hearing from You. Andy.
Please Feel Free to contact me direct also if You like [email protected]

Good Morning GB,
You've no doubt read the thread 'Mining is Alaska' in this same TNET section and that all applies to anyone going to Alaska. There are several pay to prospect locations in Alaska, Gains Creek is one and they are on the internet. Even for us on the North American Continent an Alaska adventure is a heavy undertaking and for a chap coming from the UK to Alaska well, that will only add to the list of things to do. It most certinally can be done though! The Gains Creek folks would be good to contact even if you do not use them as you will get some inputs about Alaska from them. Since you will not be a U.S. citizen I would guess that you will not be allowed to purchase a firearm. A substitute for that will be at least 2 if not 4 of the very large Pepper Spray canisters to use on Bears and Moose, etc. Just going off into the bush in an area of known gold production is a bit sketchy as first you MUST confirm that where you are going to is not already someone's claim, very important to know this anywhere in the U.S. but especially in the land of the midnight sun! Being in the bush in Alaska has the potential of being no where even close to a town and you might not see people for the entire outback stay there. You will be dependent on staying safe, alive and not jumping someones claim as that could get you killed. Even then being out in the back country alone could have you visited by some less than nice folks as these types are everywhere even in down town England. I should stop here to comment that I've been prospecting or just backpacking in the Wilds of California since 1964 and 30+ years of that has been by myself and I've never had a face to face confrontation with humans though I've had several with the bears. Once I had to hike out with serious injuries but I'm responding to your post so all went well. Free visitors guides are available from the Tourism board of Alaska and in your case I would ask specifically for info on mining. What you are embarking on is a True Adventure and I wish you the best of Success with it.............63bkpkr
