Since I have started this hobby my hunts have been confined to parks in my town. Today we are making a trip to a old homestead that my wife's grandfather lived at. It will probably have a lot of overgrowth and is located in the forest. I have a Fisher F5 with the 11" DD coil. Is there any tips on hunting a site like this I should know before I go?

Bug spray and a machete. Dig everything. Try to figure out where the doors and porch might have been...

Also try to find the old privy. Dig it and screen it.

The reason I ask this is because her grandfather had bought the property because he believed that the loot from the last train robbery in Montana was stashed there.

Now that's going to take lots of research and luck. Is the home still standing?

No but the foundation may still be there. The loot was supposed to have been gold. Her grandfather died after his wife said she accidentally served him poison mushrooms. She lived there looking for the loot too. It was rumored that the leader of the gang hid the cache and laid low. His fellow gang members were arrested and convicted of the robbery but would not squeal on the leader so as not to give up the haul. The man who hid the gold died back east penniless as the railroad kept track of him hoping to catch him going back for the gold. It is a good story but don't know if it is where they hid it. The events did take place and her grandfather believed it enough to buy the property and spent his life looking for it.

If I had that going for me, then I would dig every signal.

Have you tried to research any of this on your own?

I always look for Daffidols in the spring There are hardy and were usually planted by the home,,,,, I came upon a huge patch of them once in the woods and it was a productive hunt

Look for a natural landmark ( rock outcropping ) stomes laid in a formation, anything that looks like it could have been there for years

Think as the person who hid it Sometimes I will just go and sit on the property and see what pops into my mind as I look

Outhouses will usually leave an small sinkhole in the land , They will usually be a short distance from the residence and out in the rear of the residence

Most people who hid treasure near their homes would place it where THEY COULD KEEP AN EYE ON IT from the residence

Hope those tips help Good Luck

Excellent ideas!

Thanks for the ideas. Sorry to say my first trip was not very fruitful as the site was so trashy I could not get the same target ID with any 4 swings of the coil and the over growth was terrible. I need a sniper coil as the 11" DD was worthless there. Only came away with a zinc penny and a piece of costume jewelry that was a surface find.

Don't give up. Do you have any pictures?

Sorry I don't. I will take some my next trip there.

use your DD where the trash signals end, search where the driveway is slowly and pick out solid signals, if its an old farm? cover between where the field is and the barn, they would have a road for taking their equipment to plant and harvest, or depending on the date their equip would be a team of horses and a plow. although a sniper coil is best for the more trashy areas.
