Advice from T'netters leads this newbie to great finds and first cache!!

Thanks for looking!! I posted a question in the Metal Detecting Forum about a piece of property my dad just purchased here in south Ga. and received some great advice . . . (thanks Funkman!). The property has an old 1964 mobile home however the property was once an old farm. Adjacent to the trailer is the foundation of an old slave shack. Right behind the trailer is an old covered well. I took the wife and kids this weekend to help the old man do some work there and managed to get in a couple hours worth of detecting. Man this place is REALLY trashy. I get a hit on literally every swing of the Ace 250. It will take a while to get through the junk but I am excited about what could be out there. Here are my first pics as a T'netter. It seems I am finding a little something from many different decades. It's really hard to date a lot of it but it is still exciting. The "cache" I found was at 8" and I probably left that many more in the same hole to get back to at a later date!! Enjoy!!

That is a pretty place. Looks like you found a ton of nails, though.

Foose way to get out there and hunt, sounds like you have what it takes to find the good stuff. You are doing all the right things.
The Cache you are referring to... is it the Cache of nails???
Wasn't sure?
Happy Hunting.

Unfortunately yes ;D . . . I dug all the nails in the picture out of one hole. They were 8" deep and I finally got tired of picking them up and decided to hit other areas since I only had a short time to hunt. I will go back and empty the hole the next time I am down there. The weird thing is that there were several older square head nails mixed in with a bunch of newer looking nails . . . so I guess somebody decided to bury there nail "treasure" in that spot for some reason.

Foose - Welcome to TNet, and nice bunch of finds. Look forward to seeing your many finds.

Nice cache there, reminds me of one I found years back. At the base of an apple tree, I found over 100 solid copper wood screws, most being about 1 1/2 inches long. They were all within a 6 inch circle, probably were in a bag.

Foose,

Welcome aboard. Glad to have you with us. Congrats on your first cache. Looks like a very nice place to dig. Keep up the great work.

Hey Welcome to Treasure Net and neat finds. Looks like you can build a house now. LOL

If you go back to the site, take a magnet with you, those nails will be much easier to pick up with a magnet.

Try hunting in Coin mode on your ACE 250 and with a sensitivity around 4 notches. Iron objects usually only sound off in one direction. If when you swing the coil and only get a sound in one direction, it's usually Iron. Look at your meter, it will tell you that also. Just a tip or two.

HH and Good Luck, Ringfinder

Re: Advice from T'netters leads this newbie to great finds and first cache!!

Foose,

Congrats on your first finds at this promising site. It will take some time but when you pull your first old coin out of there it will all be worth it. At least that is a hundred or so less nails you have to worry about. Try and concentrate on an area where you pull the oldest stuff out of. Get everything out of there and then move to another section. If you are feeling up to it, and I might do this at my site, is to take a couple of inches of dirt off the top of a section and then detect that newly exposed layer. Might get a deeper object that is out of the range of the detector this way.

Keep me posted when you find more items.

Good Luck

SUPER JOB FOOSE! Those old foundations (especially an old slave dwelling) certainly should get the extra attention it deserves.

Those are some fantastic relics, and remind me of the same exact stuff I was digging last month when I made my find of a lifetime. I hope you do very well at the site, stay focused and look in all those out of the way places and keep your eye peeled for any type of landmark (odd rocks or stones, carvings, lonely trees or even distant landmarks).

Thanks for sharing the story and pictures and GOOD LUCK!!!!

At least those nails where in one hole, sure beats diggin them 1 at a time :)
You'll be working on that place for years. My farm has tons of iron. Its scattered all over from the dirt work done in the past.

I would bet there are some really nice relics there, but you'll dig a ton of junk. With the slave history, maybe you'll dig something valuable.

Keep posting pix, looks like a great place

Re: Advice from T'netters leads this newbie to great finds and first cache!!

GREAT LOCATION, YOU SHOULD FIND A LOT OF RELICS THERE!!!!

Re: Advice from T'netters leads this newbie to great finds and first cache!!

This is when you should rope off a 10'x10' area clear all the trash. Then look for the Coins/relics in that area and do it one area at a time. May take a little more time to clear the lot but at least you would have found most the good stuff. Intresting site, should be some younger silver from the trailer park along with older coins from the camp. However slaves didn't have many coins, you want the slave owners money. Find that foundation and yard area of the owners home.

Keep @ it and HH!!

Re: Advice from T'netters leads this newbie to great finds and first cache!!

All I can say is Thank God all the nails were in one hole!! :o I can just imagine the time involved if they were seperate! lol Very cool site! I am so glad you are sharing your hunts with us! :D

Thanks Night Stalker. I just read your story last night and had to drag my wife over to the computer so she could read it as well. It is stories like yours that got me interested in metal detecting in the first place!! A sincere congratulations on your find . . . one day I hope to share a similar story as well!

Re: Advice from T'netters leads this newbie to great finds and first cache!!

I wanted to thank everyone else for your kindness as well. You guys are so helpful and encouraging around here. Thanks to all those who give tips and suggestions. I will definately be taking advice from several of you about gridding off an area. I have been scatterbrained about the way I have hunted the place so far. I am going to TRY ::) and concentrate in one area at a time. I really want to hit the area around the slave foundation as well as look for the privy. I am also fairly certain there has to be a bottle/trash dump somewhere nearby. Luckily my dad owns the place and he could care less how much I dig (as long as I fill in the holes of course!).
