seems like a lot of the ace250 comments are that it's great at finding clad..... can it see deep and find old silver?
The max seems to be 8'' and that is when the soil is nice and damp (early Spring, late Fall). I did find 2 silver dimes at 10'' or so in my backyard but it was weird as a merc and rosie were stuck back to back LOL. Saw the rosie obverse and a merc reverse. Had me scratching my head until I realized it was 2 coins stuck back to back.

Older coins move up and down with our freeze/thaw cycles. I found a walking lib about 2'' down in my front yard, yet can find ZLincons at 6 - 8'' >:(

Get the 9x12 coil, that all I ever use on my Ace and I have found 14 silver coins with it. :icon_pirat:

9 x 12 you say... oops.. guess i should have spent the extra $80 and ordered the 'sport' pkg

6" is a more realistic average depth for the ACE 250. It can go up to 8" in damp soil like OZ said... and the larger coil should only get you about another 1" or so in depth. Nothing terrific. The 4.5" Sniper coil is another good one to have because the ACE doesn't have the best target separation in the world when hunting in trash.

Make sure you get yourself in some OLD areas and you'll be finding silver! My Dad found a seated dime in great shape at 1" down... being in the right area has it's advantages :)

I agree with Brett, in that 6 inches is a more realistic maximum depth for the Ace, in most cases. After that, the signal tends to be broken and can be confused with trash signals.

If you've got the extra funds, pick up the larger coil for the Ace. Kermit (TreasureFiend) has one and was finding way more than me, when I used the Ace 250 w/ standard coil. In my opinion, it goes a bit more than an extra inch, compared to the standard coil. He was regularly finding coins at 8 and 9 inches when I couldn't get past 6 or 7.

And, Brett's right when he suggested you find some older, preferrably unhunted sites. All of the parks in Chicago have been hunted to death for years with much more technological, deeper detectors, and finding silver might prove to be a daunting task with the Ace. Find some forested areas nearby, do some research and find out what may have occured there in the past (picnic grounds, old paths, well, homestead, etc), make sure it's OK to dig there, and you'll have better results.

I started using an Ace in 2006. Found a ton of clad but only 1 silver. Of course I wasnt hunting in good spots so that might be the reason I couldnt find squat. lol. I feel that the stock coil may get 6 inches in damp soil but I have found a lot of silver in that range. Like others said find a good spot and hit it. SMAN...

Goober has a valid point, use your machine to it's strengths. If you wanted to hunt Washington Park for example, you better take a high end detector and right now the Minelabs seem to be the best bet in that environment. I regularly do a circuit of tot lots and schoolyards with my old Fisher 1235X and gotten gold rings to 7 inches with it in sand and woodchips. But I'd never take that rig to the park dirt, too noisy and indecisive with junk around.

When I hit the woods or the water I use a CZ-20, and up until this fall a CZ-7 with the 10.5" coil. I've dug barber quarters to 12 inches and clad to 10 inches. So depth is sometimes really over rated. Target separation is the winning factor. Deep or shallow. Don't mind digging clad in the playgrounds when it's sand or woodchips. But cutting a hole 10 inches to find dirty clad is a real inspiration drain.

Yeah there's shallow oldies, but your best bet for that is very rural, isolated native ground that has never seen any development or farming. Our native soil around here usually has some gravel that keeps the coins near the top if there's not a lot of other interaction at the site.

Most of the good finds where I hunt are 4-6 inches. I hesitate on something at 2 inches. I have dug things at 8 inches.
