Hi all,

UPS is saying that my ACE 250 will be here tomm. ;D Being new to MDing, is there anything i need to have, other than the itch to dig and batteries, to go hunting the moment it comes out of the box? Also, I keep reading about settings for the 250. (mode, sensitivity, etc.) What are the best settings to start to learn about my machine? I will be hunting mostly local parks and the occasional river bank to start with and at the end of the month I will be down in Waveland, MS beach hunting. Thanks in advance for the help.

First, I suggest you read the manual before even turning it on. Surprising how many people don't. But it will be helpful.

I mainly beach-comb with mine. I keep the sensitivity around 4-5 bars, go in all-metal, and eliminate the bottom notch. (Discriminating against most iron.) I have learned that this keeps me from digging a lot of rusty nails.

The manual gives some good pointers on pinpointing (no pun intended), and I find it most accurate around 2-3 notches sensitivity, once I've narrowed in on a find.

Oh, and learn the boops, beeps, and bings. Those that consistantly sound like a bell are your best hits, almost always something good. The lower pitched boops are most likely junk. But to start, I recommend digging on every hit -- it's the best way to learn what gives what signal, reading, and sound.

Happy Hunting!

Probably too late now. But go to the garrett web site and you can down load the manual and get a head start on it. Congrats on the new detector. Enjoy HH

I forgot to ask in the earlier post...I have a decent pair of Sony earbuds that I use with my laptop on trips, would they be OK for MDing? Thanks.

If they have a 1/4" plug, they should. But I wouldn't use them myself. The 250 doesn't have a volume control, and the beeping can be kind of loud. I would suggest a more traditional set of headphones which you can place in front of your ears (this is what I do) or a set with a volume control built in. You do want to hear the beeps over background noises, but not so loud that it can hurt your ears.

My suggestion? Try them out. See if they are an okay volume for you. If not, invest another ten bucks in a basic set of phones, and wear them ahead of your ears. (So you look like a geek. We do anyway, waving a MD around, so who cares?)

250 also comes with a decent DVD you should watch as your perusing through the manual. Get earphones w/adjustable volume if you're in a public place where incessant beeping would bother someone or its too loud to hear otherwise. Other than that, you don't really need them with the 250.

Have fun...hope you strike silver. If not, at least the thing vacuums up quarters! (just have to go where they are)

DVD??? I don't think I got one. But then again, I've gotten pretty good with it so I don't need it at this point. But I'm sure it gives good pointers. Can't hurt to do all the research possible before using it.

HH!
