ACE 250 / how does it stack up to your partner's high dollar MD?

Greetings all!

(I usually hunt alone, or with a fellow ACE 250 user.)

I was wondering if any of you ACE 250 users hunt with a partner that has a more expensive machine?

How does the ACE stack up?

Does your partner find more?

all opinions would be appreciated!

I have used an Ace 250 in a farm field with my partner using a Minelab Explorer... He found some Indians and I found squat.

I now use a Minelab Explorer and one of my hunting partners uses an Ace 250. He has found a couple of silver coins and maybe 10 wheats or so. I've found 79 silver, 73 Indian Heads, and 443 Wheats.... There is no real comparison if you are in an area where coins sink deep. If you are in an area where the soil is harder and coins don't go deep than you might not need a better machine.

The Ace, for all the ballyhoo, is a $200 detector. Charles Garrett set out to put as many desirable features as possible in a $200 package - he succeeded. However it is a compromise.

It is not as smooth as the high end units I am familiar with. It will "bong" you to death if you crank the SENS too high and it can be a booger to pinpoint with in the beginning. Like all Garrett GTA units I have used, it demands a little readjustment in your methods. Yes, the Minelabs will detect deeper - ditto the 2500 and the Fisher CZ-70. Probably the Whites "Acronym Units," too, although I havent pitted them against t.

But for $200 or less, whaddya want? It is a good basic detector that has a lot of nice features and does a darned good job of holding its own against the big boys. It has surprisingly good separation thanks to its elliptical coil, great response/recovery speed and it has surprised me many times with its depth. That's pretty good for a detector I got for $160, dontcha think? Enjoy it for what it is and remember:

"If you dont get it today, you'll get it next time.
Or maybe not.
Maybe someone else will get it.
Or maybe not.
Regardless, one day you'll die and take none of it with you.
Act accordingly."

Very good post on the Ace 250.

Re: ACE 250 / how does it stack up to your partner's high dollar MD?

i have an ace 250 and a gti 2500. i can honestly say that the $200 ace holds its own pretty good against the 2500. sure, it doesnt have ground balance, and isnt very practical near salt water like the 2500. it doesnt have a lighted display,or surface elimination, and doesnt have the same discrimination abilities or depth, but it still has pretty good depth, is easy to use, lightweight, and is a lot of fun . i still use mine from time to time and have no plans of getting rid of it. it is a very capable detector for $200, in my opinion.

Re: ACE 250 / how does it stack up to your partner's high dollar MD?

for $200- its a good MD. I've used one a bit, its light-weight, well balanced
but the display is too small for these old eyes. Depth in discrimination mode did
not appear to be as good as My 2500 and After using the GTI2500, I would
miss the imaging capabilities. Imaging seems very accurate to 6-7" so it makes
it seem like I'm able to "see" underground.
Course there is a terrific price difference between the two!!! I think for the price
the 250 is a excellant buy!

Re: ACE 250 / how does it stack up to your partner's high dollar MD?

last weekend I hunted with Danimal, He has a Ace 250.
I have a DFX. Many a times we both scanned a hole with the same results. I was really impressed with the ACE 250 and it's depth. Plus half the weight. Look at the latest post " 11-26 hunt with Zoso at the Silver Mine!...packing heat and big silver ". The results are in there. It looks to be a rugged machine!! And worthy of abuse. The problem with the DFX is..I tend to be extra cautious with it. Always being careful when I use it. For the price..I would get one (and thinking about it)

Just my $0.02 worth.

Hey CaptinHenry,

Call Dan at Metaldetector.com (800-446-0244).
http://www.metaldetector.cc/index.asp

I got my ACE250 and some other items from there and have nothing but praise for their service. Highly recommend them.

Re: ACE 250 / how does it stack up to your partner's high dollar MD?

I don't know if I'd buy into all the "high end detector" hype that you read here. Every detector has it's place and it's good and bad points. The 250 is a chattery in trashy iron areas, but look what Danimal does with his. If you're a coinshooter, the 250 SCREAMS on coins. I was at the Otterville hunt in October and saw just as many good finds from the 250 guys as the "high end" guys. HH, Eric

Whether using a cheap or expensive detector--
knowing what it is telling ya is very important.
The more bells and whistles and options, the
longer the learning curve. I personally find it
difficult to switch between My detectors- I stay
with the high end one so I can learn it well.
Some of the higher valued finds are from the
less expensive detectors.
Use what works for ya- after all its a hobby.
Except for a few lucky dogs!!!!!!!!

DAnimal doesnt count...

its not what he uses but where he takes it that counts

Re: ACE 250 / how does it stack up to your partner's high dollar MD?

Just got the 9X12 coil and cover from him, he stands behind his prices and his word. I asked for the tracking number and followed it across the US.

Zero problem vendor, in my experience and option.

the jewelry coin are discrimination mode like the bounty hunter time ranger. i notice they does about as good but you can ground balance the bounty hunter. but i had no problem with the ace 250 one ground balance yet it work great at a park had it on jewelry to see how it works found a foil have to get use to it love the pinpointing easier the bounty hunter that how i found the foil.
