Ace 250 "hotspot"

Could anyone tell me how I could find out where the "hotspot" in pinpoint mode would be on my Ace 250? I saw something about a shallow coin being under the front center edge of the inner coil, while a deeper coin would be under the exact center of the whole coil.

Could someone shed some light on this for a newbie to pinpointing?

Thanks,

Funkman

PBK,

Yep, checked that out and that confirms where I think they are, but was wondering if that is the "true" location. Was not sure if others have found that the coin lies under another portion of the coil when pinpointing then what the manufacturer states.

Thanks PBK.

Yes, it is true that not all coils have a hot spot in the center where the manufacture thinks it is located. Due to manufacturing, some coils aren't produced equally. The best way to find your "sweeet spot," is to lay a coin down and see where on the coil it pinpoints loudest.

Sandman,

Should I bury the coin or just leave it on the surface?

Thanks,

p.s. as you can see I upgraded the Radio Shack version but still keeping it for a spare or to have the kids and Scouts use it. :D

Funk, based on previous conversations, it wouldn't reall matter doing an air test or burying it a few inches, it will more than likely have the same result. I would tell you to air test it, that way you have a better visual on where its hitting. Good luck to you!

Re: Ace 250 "hotspot"

On a real shallow coin it will be at the front of the second coil loop. One way I know it is real shallow is if you hold the pinpoint button down and approach the target the pinpoint sound will go dead for a second and as soon as the sound comes back the target should be right under the second coil loop. On a deeper target you will not get that silence for a second. Best was is to experiment with a coin on top of the ground and bury one a couple inches deep. There are some detailed instructions on the treasuredepot website on the garrett forum.

Re: Ace 250 "hotspot"

I don't argee with those who say the hotspot is center, at least thats not the case with me.
It is the tip of the inner [smaller] coil. AFAIK, the outer coil transmits, the inner coil recieves.
This is easy enough to verify with a coin, or any metal object, laying in sight [detector pinpoints in all metal no matter what mode you are in.
Just bear in mind that often times a buried coin on angle will thrown pinpoint off, sometimes by as much as 2 inches.
I consider myself deadly accurate with 250 pinpointing, yet at times I would be off an inch or so and couldn't figure out why, until I noticed those coins where I am off were always angled. So ... If you've dug past 6 inches [the usefull detection range for a coin sized metal object for the 250] and still have no target but yet a sigal and pinpoint, you'll need to shave off the hole walls [target is usally located in the front wall in these circumstances, but possibly any of the four] to find it.
Handheld pinpointers are a great help in this regards, for they let you know where its hiding before you have a chance to scratch it.
Note also that the deeper the target, the less reliable pinpoint is [and also target id].
I would imagine that this holds true for all detectors.
