I finally sent the rest of my money for my Ace 250 to the dealer...He called me Monday evening to tell me he didnt have one in stock but his distributor is sending me my detector...I see that alot of folks use one or the 150...are they are good detector??? I think I made a good decision but I would like to hear from some of you that use yours on a regular basis....so if anyone has something , let me know....I appreciate it....

Not a top of the line model ,but a good machine.I have found piles of coins with mine.My oldest to date is an 1851 three cent piece.
Good Luck,
Jim

I use minelabs but the wife uses a ACE 250, she beats me at times, they are a great little machine, just gotta learn the sensitivity when you are using it.

It will pay for itself in no time. The Ace 250 is a coin magnet. If there is a coin it the ground it will find it. Here is a story for you. I work at a firestation. We have a little lot right next door to our station. 75 X100 or so. It is a hill. I have dug Civil war bullets, Harmonica reeds, Silver Nickels. Hunted it out I thought. I usually hunt in Jewelry mode. I switched to Relic mode the other day and dug a 1927 Wheat penny out of it. It was about 5-6 inches down. So just goes to show you that the Ace 250 is a wicked machine.

Thanks everyone for letting me know about the 250....Just wanted to know if I made a good or bad decision...lots of folks told me I made a mistake...called it a toy and a little piece of junk...one guy told me I could have gotten on Ebay and found something better for the money...I think I did pretty good...Like I told him(he owns several Whites), most of the time it is not the machine but the operator....Told me I was wasting my time with that "toy"...I think he is just jealous....thanks everyone...see ya later.... ;D

You are going to hear that a lot. It's like driving a ford or a chevy, you are always gonna have different opinions of why one is better then the other. The Ace250 is NOT a toy, it will find some really great stuff. Take your time and learn to use it. I started off using mine in all metal mode and not discriminating out anything. You will quickly learn the different tones and ID's. Don't always trust the LED readout, I have learned to dig the good signals as well as some of the iffy ones. I don't know exactly how it decides what is what on the readout but lots of time it's off. Coins like dimes and quartes will sound off as good solid targets but nickles and pennys not so much. If I had only gone by the LED readout I would have missed some really cool stuff. So far the oldest coin I have found is a 1876 sheild nickle but it was an iffy trashy signal (glad I went ahead and dug it).
You haven't made a mistake, but give yourself time to learn what it can do. After about 30 hours of hunting with it I felt really comfortable with it and I was guessing what was in the ground before I dug with about 75% accuracy. I will probably spend the money and buy a more expensive detector someday but I won't get rid of the 250. It will always be a good detector to let someone else use or for a back up detector.
If you look around on this site you will find several threads about the 250 with lots of good info. Have fun with it and happy hunting, Charlie

I've had my Ace250 for almost three years. It was my first detector, and remains the only one that I own.

Its an awesome machine. Take the time to learn it and it will pay off for you. There is a huge amount of information on this site, but in my opinion the best way to learn it is to jump right in (try one of the preset programs) and then back up your field experiences by reading what's written on this forum and posting your questions.

There are better machines out there, but the Ace will hold its own when you take the time to really learn it. I've hunted side by side with people who spent 3x the amount of money, and "beat" them time after time because I knew my machine better than they did.

The more I learn, the more I wish that the Ace had just a few more features (Manual GB for one), so at some point I'll probably add a second machine for my aresenal. But the Ace will never sit in a closet gathering dust.

I'd say your friend has never used the 250, so doesn't know crap about it, as for a toy, best toy you can buy on the market then!!! I've owned a few detectors in the last 25 years including Whites, Garretts, Tesoro, and Minelab. I now mainly use the Minelab, but my backup is the Ace 250. I use in on playgrounds at schools or Parks and have paid for it countless times just in what I've found. It has been killer on gold for me, I even found a Merc in a playground about five inches deep(very surprised at that). I use the Minelab for the deeper older things, but from many posts I've read on this site it is definitely no toy!! If you feel you've got the detector you like then it is not a bad decision!! I personally feel you made a great decision and will enjoy using it. Just remember, when you first use it you are going to have to learn what its trying to tell you and the more you use it, the better you will become at deciding what to or not to dig. Best place to start is where the money is easy to find, like a school playground and check every signal and listen to the sounds, how easy it is to tell a coin close to the top or a little deeper!! I hope to see some great finds from you soon and I hope you have as much fun with your "toy" as I do with mine!!

Ive been thinking about getting one also, I use a fisher and a whites right now, they do the job and then some, but many people on here use the 250 and a lot of the finds they post are quite remarkable. For what they want for one? you cant go wrong!!

I have the Eagle Spectrum also along with the Ace 250. Darn the whites is heavy and man the Ace is light as a feather. I find myself grabbing the Ace most of the time.

Yep :o

I think the Ace 250 is a great machine for the money. I dug a colonial at more than 10 inches with mine, so the depth is definitely there.

One piece of advice:

PURCHASE A SET OF HEADPHONES WITH A VOLUME CONTROL. THE ACE 250 DOES NOT HAVE A VOLUME CONTROL. IF YOU USE THE ACE HEADPHONES YOU WILL GO DEAF!!!

I had to yell that for the people who learned the hard way ;D

How true. I threw mine in the trash. I am deff :D

I've owned the Ace 250 for a year and a half. I think it is the best investment I could have made to start metal detecting. Depth is pretty good (not great) but I have found coins up to 7" deep. My oldest coin is an 1882 Morgan silver dollar. I do get the feeling that there are more coins beneath the range of the 250, but what do you want for $200??? It is an introductory machine, and as such, dollar for dollar, is probably the best buy you can get. I am looking at upgrading to an Etrac, but it costs 6 or 7 times as much. Will it recover 6 or 7 times more than the 250? NO! But it should be fun to see what I have missed.

Like I said, the 250 is probably the BEST introductory machine out there. I love mine!!!

HH,

Dr. Ace

Got my Ace late December. I had never MD'ed before, no experience at all.
Read TNet from cover to cover :D Learned from everybody here.
Got out there and used it.
Six silver rings, one gold. Plenty of coin.
You will love it.

A lot of people will tell you this detector is better, or that detector is better...but I'll tell you, that as an introductory unit, the Ace 250 IS a great machine. I upgraded to an Ace 250 when they first came out, some years ago. I used it exclusively for maybe two years, and it paid for itself in about six months (detecting only 1-2 days a week during the Chicago season.) I used it on the beach and it was great. I found a copper ring down about 8 inches in the sand. I was about to give up on it, thinking it was a false signal. I used it in the parks, woods...everywhere! Now, I use it mostly in tot lots, which I occasionally hunt if I'm near one with a few minutes to spare. The depth and target separation is not the best. But, as someone else mentioned, for the price, it is a good deal. It will pick up any and all coins in the 0-4 inch range at least.

I would recommend a coil cover for it, though. I used mine for a year or so when I realized the coil was all cracked and chipped (from being banged around in tot lots or in the trunk of the car.) Since affixing the cover, I have had no further problems.

Let us know how it works out!

Joe

for new folks that don't know that much about detecting and don't want to spend to much to see if they like detecting or not ( say in price range -- of 250 / 300 bucks ) -- the Ace 250 is hard to beat --its simple to use , light weight , and its dead on 0 to 4 inches of depth and works decently at a max depth of about 6 to 8 of depth on coins in most places --- are there better units out there sure --however for those extra 2 to maybe 4 inches of depth (say 10 to max of 12 inches of depth) on coin sized items -- they cost 2 to 5 times as much -- of course there are always the "I would rather push a FORD the drive a CHEVY" types out there -- we got em in the detector world even worse than cars .--- brand x is great , brand y stinks --- hooray for brand x
