A weird addition to the "what is it file"

I actually picked this up at a thrift/antique/junk shop in a box of goodies. It only ended up costing me a buck to buy it and for a buck it has filled me with hours and hours of wonder. So umm, what is it?

I can only think it's a piece of armor or something, you'll see what I mean when looking at the pics.

Help!!

I should add that all attempts to find this on the net have been fruitless, unless I am simply looking in the wrong direction. >:(

I think its called a vambrace gauntlet....should have a set of two and were used with two handled swords and hand to hand combat........

My weird way of thinking is a wall sconce torch holder. But one the good note, I think it has more than $1's worth of brass. ;)

You must have some kind of thrift store there...antique armour and dogs. Do they sell used treasure hunters too? I could use a new partner, mine cheaped out again today "but it's raining."
Silly! The dog was rescued from a shelter before he was put to sleep. The armor was rescued from a box. I have a habit of rescuing things. My husband seems to think I collect junk. I prefer the rescue term. :)

My guess would be more ornamental.... like maybe for the theater, part of a costume? Kabuki?

I think gypsy is right. I appears to be a vambrace gauntlet replica. I have seen similar ones that you hang on walls with a sword and shield collection.

Hey ,
This is Saber I am posting on my GF account as not to have to log her off. I think what you have here is an ornamental piece to a padu...or madu I can not member which is which. But either way I think it is a gauntlet part of a padu. The nose looks like something is broken off perhaps a sword. Which is what a padu was a sword attached to a gauntlet. It was mainly used in Malaysia and India in ceremony but did see some action. I think the one you have is a replica as most of the older ones are totally enclosed. But like I said it maybe a ornamnetal one. The padu madu combination were circa 1300 to 1700 ...the cross bar in the one you have looks like its steel..or iron, is it hollow? and can you see any weld marks.

Ahhh I get it now. Something similar to #13 on this? http://hindunet.org/saraswati/pata2.jpg

The crossbar appears to be solid. The mouth of the cat which would attach to the sword is broken on spots, so I assume that's where the sword would attach and where the weld would be?

This sheds a lot of light on this piece! Thanks!

DD,

Regardless to what it is, I think it is interesting. Hope you find what it's worth.

BTW, I like your dog too.

Re: A weird addition to the "what is it file"

I think..it is more akin to a pata..I guess thats how it spells out. Than a katar...most katars I have seen have always been open top and bottom. Is it brass? Not sure the worth but it is a really cool find, the only pata I have ever seen was made by a friend of mine who makes armour and was a steel gauntlet not copper or brass. I also think it is more likely mold formed than hammer formed. But I dont know its all speculation here. Good find..look closely around the rolled edges for a mark of a maker or armoury.
