I decided to make a little time for detecting today (It was either that or washing the car... no contest really!)
Threw the Garrett and spade into the back of the Land Rover, and made my way over to a little place known as Brownhills Common. I'm led to believe that it's on the site of an old coal mine, which wouldn't surprise me. I am however awaiting an old map of the area to arrive so I can do a little more research on it.
A lot of people have 'fly tipped' trash on the edge of the site which obviously makes it harder work than it should be. I sodiered on anyhow, digging up can after can, tab after tab.... then I spotted something... something I didn't expect.
Poking out from the greenery was brickwork (See Pic 1).... so i hacked around a while trying to get an angle on what may have been there. It looks like there was a very big brick building on the site.
A passer by walking his dog seemed to think it was the site of the old Mine Offices, but wasn't too sure. It could well be, as it's really close to a now defunct railway line, which used to carry coal from the area to local power stations.
To be honest, I had no plan of attack on this site. Without a decent map I was stabbing in the dark. But, I wandered round swinging the coil for a while in likely areas. Only a couple of hours worth of detecting, and not a fat lot to show for it... but I think this site holds great promise.
How the garden fork got there... who knows? !!!!
