Hi All,
I grew up on a typical Indiana farm. Lots of cattle, corn and callouses.
The house we lived in burned to the ground in 1986. Although we still own the property, I rarely go back there.
This morning I packed my gear and decided to hunt the old family site.
So, I'm sweeping away at what used to be the front yard and because there was little trash, I was digging everything - matchbox cars, a small bicycle part, a brass washer...and then a slight "beep".
Nothing strong, probably a pull tab.
I dig down three inches and pull up a piece of aluminum. By the shape of it, I already know what it is.
I turn it over and read the writing....and I almost choke up.
You see, aside from your siblings, a farm kid's best friend is his dog.
He's your playmate, your protector, your pal.
Today...46 years later, I found my dog - Spike's dog tag.
For a split second, we were once again, running through bean fields, chasing groundhogs.
I've found some neat stuff while metal detecting, but right now, at this moment, this means more to me than any of my finds.
Here's hoping you dig up a memory,
Indiana Digger
