I went fishing at a new spot about 20 miles away. The fishing spot was a man made rock dam on a river. I found a strange concrete formation there. It is about 15 feet long and about 8 foot wide. It has two stairs on it like it would lead into a building. There is a post in the ground at each corner of the concrete. The posts have been cut off almost flat with the top of the concrete. There is a couple of big chunks of bricks cemented together just a short ways away that look like the outside of a chimney. There is two dirt mounds in the area that are about 15 feet in diameter and about 3 feet tall. What should I do? It looks like a popular fishing spot due to the foot traffic and vehicle tracks. What I find really strange is all of this is within 50 foot of the river. Why would somebody build something like this so near the river? What about flooding? The area where the "chimney thing" is at is already flooded. What is this stuff? What are the mounds of dirt all about? What should I do? Should I dig into the mounds? If there is something there how do I find it? If there is a bottle there how do I keep from breaking it. I ran the metal detecor around a mound and it was going nuts. Is this a dump? There is to much trash everywhere so I cant MD. i've never found something like this before so I have a lot of questions. I'm sure I'll have more questions as this post progresses. I dont no where to start.

eazy think mill --- grain or grist mill --- thus a building close to water -- since the mill was most likely water powered. --the mounds might be bottle dump areas.

Why didn't I think of that. I live in iowa. We have grain coming out of our ears. How do I find out if its a bottle dump? What do I do if it is? I cant just run a shovel into the mounds can I?

And then what? If the rod stops then start digging? What diameter rod should I get? Should I get one about 1/2 inch or would something like an 1/8 inch work better

Just start with a large screwdriver to "probe" around if you're more comfy with that...

Yeah maybe a mill building. At first I thought "river lock" but those are in the water. You should MD it, find some good history

I would guess mill too, but also keep in mind that water was an easy form a transportation back when so it could be a number of things if not a mill my second guess would be a place where you could load or unload supplies and transport them. A pic would be very helpful. Don't forget reseach pull up old maps of the area and search the interenet to see if there were any mills in your area.

1/8 inch is good.. Something like this..Or you can make your own..I like to dig alot ;D the more you dig ,the more you find....... You get use to it,you can hear the glass when the steel hits the bottles..........And also take your detector and look in all the dirt you take out of the mounds..Goodluck
