Hi guys. I have been in detecting for gold from the start of the 1990s, and had a few goes in the 80s.
I have met some many great people in my time.
The one of all that has been amazing is a good friend who does not detect. He has all the time dug holes and shafts on old leads, virgin areas and reefs. Now n then he finds some ok stuff.
But this. He lives in the bush old digger style like ours in the 1880s and your guys in the early before electricity days. In a calico tent, no lie, makes his own bed out of tree branches, cooks on a fire and that's how he lives. Known him since I started. I used to show him places I thought were worth a go. He had hit n miss success, nothing great. Once he did ok on his own spot, had a shaft down 15 feet and drove, got some nice bits. Was so happy for him, didn't make him rich but was good.
Recently in the past 12 months, I had not seen him for a while but the last time I did he told me, I never say a word to anyone, he was digging a shaft down on the side of a reef and had prospected gold up the hill to it. A guy I know very very well who knows him told me this happened.
This is in Central Victoria. A certain person heard he was doing it. Well known here. My friend, the digger, got sick and had to go to a Dr and get tests n stuff. The well known guy heard. When my friend went back he found him down the shaft with a detector and had pulled it all apart. He was confronted and told to go. A day or two later dog was back with a heavy backup and threatened my friend to leave. He is a peaceful man and did. Nobody has seen him in the district since. Dog was later heard bragging of being down a shaft and getting nearly $80,000 worth of gold out of specimens.
Im gutted knowing this. He as old time left his pick and shovel there and his camp expecting decent honesty. Everyone knows him, the Dog knew him and #$&$ on him.
Its the worst example I know of here happening to a known down and out battler for gold. šŸ˜•

Oh, that is a story which has been repeated many times anywhere that gold is found. A rich strike can get you killed.

True. He is the nicest most gentle person iv met. Have always wanted to hear he finally hit it big. He even looks like an old time prospector from the 1800s! I and others tried to help and show him for years. Gutted me to find it out.

Sounds like that certain person needs some lessons taught to him. Not sure how it goes over there, but I wouldn't shed a tear if that man disappeared in the bush one night.

Unfortunately our Govt won't let us carry anything. And rifle's, well they need to be locked up like a bank vault so by the time you get it out if you need it in an emergency it'd probably be too late.

I'm the odd man out again I don't carry I have a bad ass dog...
Good for snakes, cats bears n wierdos, and good company on long camp outs...
I can trust my dog something I can't say about most humans...
Theyā€™re a good early warning system. I donā€™t have a dog right now but when I get a bigger place to live Iā€™m getting another. Iā€™d like some burros too. Iā€™ve seen them kick the living piss out of aggressive creatures. I do my best not to go mining alone after I broke my leg at my momā€™s claim a few years ago getting my dredge from the creek in a storm. My claim partners wife before she passed away told him to never go to the claim by himself. I still wander the woods alone while hunting but I carry a satellite phone now.
