Took a 45 minute drive to an area that used to be an old army fort, and is now a county park and recreation area. I went with the hope of finding some old coins, but ended up with some great relics instead. The place is covered with tin and iron, and about 3 hours into my 6 hour hunt I really didn't have much to show for it and was about ready to move on. But then I ended up finding 4 round balls grouped close together which gave me the motivation to keep on hunting. It's a good thing I did keep hunting because I ended up with some really awesome finds. For one, the only old coin I did happen to find ended up being my oldest yet, an 1865 Indian Head Cent. I also found a nice piece that says US on it, which I believe comes off a 1859 horse bridle bit. Then there is my best find yet, which I'm very excited about :) A plate off of the helmet of an 1872 Cavalry dress uniform. It is definitely a once in a lifetime find, and I am very happy to be able to add it to my metal detecting collection. Especially with the 7th cavalry being a part of local history here, it makes me appreciate it even more.

Thanks for looking and Happy hunting!!

I maybe wrong but I think that 'US' is of a style that is Post-CW. (But I'll let the experts wade in)
