Went to an early 1800's house in my town to get some detecting in before the rain. This sweet little lock was one of the first things I dug. I really didn't dig much else except for an old salt/pepper shaker top.

Although a Colonial style, I suspect that, due to the age of the house this lock is from right around 1800.

Here it is compared to a penny. As you can see, it is quite small. I am thinking maybe for a box of some type?(such as a strong box)

This is the first lock I have ever found.

That is the cutest little brass lock I have ever laid eyes on. Congrats on your first and a mighty nice old one as well.

That is a early one :icon_thumleft:

Sweet little lock , I sure would have been happy . Congrats !!

That has a ton of character, nice recovery VTCD! : )

Very cool lock. I tend to think the lock is a bit later than 1800. While it carries the shape of larger colonial locks of the 18th century, small locks of that era were usually square or round. Slightly larger ones in that shape would have a braised center band and a keyhole in the side. Here's an example...

You case looks poured. Don't get me wrong - still a killer find and something that'll clean up amazing!

Thanks, Scrappy! It's great when I can find out when these things are from! Thank you for correcting me on the age of the lock!

Thank you everyone for saying such nice things!

That is a gorgeous lock. We have found a couple, but none like yours. Congrats. -Lisa & John

If you decide to clean it. It's highly likely it will have initials of a British monarch. Might have GR or VR. Also might just have Patend on the keyhole cover or drop.

Great looking lock recovery, congratulations! :occasion14:
