A rather unspectacular "end" to the 2008 season.

Well, it was absolutely perfect weather today and there was no way I was going to let the day go without doing some digging with the homeboys. I headed out to the woods with Kermit and Mikewaz and boy, was it hard digging! Not literally...the ground was soft and even soupy in some places. I thought it'd be a fitting end to the season if we each scored a silver, or at least a really old coin or two.

Off the bat, I got a loud chirpy quarter signal and just under the leaves was this Seiko watch. On the back is the engravings of someone's initials and the year "1982". That personalization made it a bit more interesting. That's the second full watch I've found at this location, oddly enough. A little later, I dug yet another crazy signal and came up with an old toy pistol. It is full-size and for a moment I thought it was the real deal. I held the bigger part of it (it was in two peices) to Mike with what was probably a real dumb look on my face, figuring he'd know more about it than I did. He did, and told me it was a toy, so that was cool.

After what seemed like hours (wait, it WAS hours...), we decided to move to another area we had not visited before. We were told the area held picnics and whatnot earlier than we thought, so we gave it a try. After this point, it was a lot of frustration on my part...long drawn-out periods of silence interrupted by the screaming signal of an old aluminum can top. This went on and on. We knew there was potential because Mikewaz found a very cool old coin (he'll post it, I'm sure). Eventually, I grabbed four wheats (1919 S, 1920-D, 1925, 1940) and six memorials/zincs. I also managed an old Zippo-style lighter, one of those old glass inserts for a jar lid, and a lot of trash I tossed out, of course.

Kermit and I mumbled out of that place, filthy, dirty, and tired, while Mikewaz skipped out like a happy little schoolboy, smiling wide, knowing he just schooled Kermit and I for the second consecutive time. I hope another day like this comes around soon, it'd be nice to get out for that last silver of the year. We'll see. At least we got out; Kermit and I witnessed a huge old tree fall from a gust of wind, and that was interesting to say the least (and yes, if a tree falls and someone is around to hear it, it does make a noise). FYI.

Hope you all did better than me today!

Joe

p.s. Lesson learned- don't ever wear steel-toed boots when you're metal detecting.

Nice timepiece there Joe. Gonna clean it up and get it ticking again? Warned you about them woods on a windy day. They can be killers, them trees.

Glad you guys had fun!
Wish I was there!

Great finds guys!!! Well today was a big blow out for me... After hunting all day I only had 1 coin to show for it, a 1967 clad quarter! Nothing old, not even 1 measly stinkin 50's wheatie!!!!! By the end of my sad attempt at MD'ng I had found 1 quarter, 5 shotgun shells, 2 pistol casings, more than a few old pull top can tops, an old buckle, an old lipstic tube, and an old axe head. To a relic hunter this might be a good day, but I'm lookin for coins - and it really chapps my hind that I didn't. Near the end I didn't care if I found a zinc Lincoln, I just wanted to find a coin but it was not meant to be...

That tree falling was awesome!!! I was swingin along when I herd a loud crack and crunch (the sound of the tree breaking its roots or trunk) then off it went!!! I have to admit the split second that I herd it I quickly looked around me as I don't want to wear this seasons most unwanted accessory... ;D

Man was I whooped when I got home. Those boot laces were a long way down.

It was nice to get out again with you guys. I know it was only 2 weeks ago that we hit the woods, but it sure seemed like a month or better. I think we're gonna need these thaws every couple of weeks to help us make it through the winter.

Hope we have a chance for a few more outings. If not, I guess we've got plenty of areas to research.

On more than one occasion I remember hearing shouts of "another buffalo" and "war nickel" or "I got a v nickel" while I had a clad nickel and memorial in my pocket. Today I just happened to swing my coil over the only Barber in the woods, lol.

Glad you got out, Joe! What a crappy day it was. Nice watch and gun!  I'll bet NGE(T) can tell you more about it. The early wheats are always nice to find, too.

I got out for a bit with Watercolor. DP SilverBob stopped by for a while, too. The spot we were hunting was so saturated.... My best signal was a sweet silver sounding high tone near a big tree. Turns out it's under at least two roots & was almost at the bottom of the depth meter. ;D When I went to dig it, the hole kept filling up with water & muck. :( After fighting a losing battle for a while, I decided the best thing to do was to fill the little pond I'd made back in and come back for it in the spring. At least I have something to look forward to. :-\

I switched spots and hit a spot in a different woods in an area that I found an Indian a few weeks back. The ground there was muddy, but not as bad as the first spot. I got a 1919 buff for my effort. Not the silver I had hoped for, but better than nothing at all.

Fiend, you were lucky to be close enough to see that tree go down, and even luckier to not be under it! That had to be cool!

Mike, you gonna show us that Barber? It's good to hear that you got a nice coin out of the muck today.

Yea Mike, lets see that bad oscar again!!! :icon_pirat: I'm glad that you guys found some oldies, and especially a hundred+ year old silver, that is just plain AWESOME!!!! Next year a Barber dime is at the top of my wishlist right next to a seated anything and a half of any kind. ;D

All I got was (from 2 parks) was 6 quarters, 4 dimes, 2 nickels and 10 cents. I did find some religious trinket "I Am A Catholic" but alas, just silver plated.

Never did fill my coffee container up with pull tabs this year, only made it 3/4 of the way. Those will be given to someone whose school collects them for the Ronald McDonald house.

Joe, neat watch & gun!

My father wore a Seiko just like that back in the
80's only the watch case on his was stainless steel.

Take care,

Watercolor,

The back of this watch says stainless steel. I think it's gold plating around the edge of the front. Maybe. Probably not. Whatever, either way, it's cool. The band ended up falling right off due to dry rot and so I tossed that in the trash.

Regardless of what was found, it sounds like you guys made the most of a semi-warm day and had a great time doing it! Congrats on not getting stumped by a dead tree!!

I wanna get back out there in the woods sometime before it gets buggy. Winter really is a great time to go. The frozen ground that we were digging was so hard you had to put all of your weight on the shovel and rock back and fourth about 20 times before it was all the way down. Then pulling it out was like pulling out The Excalibur sword! Then you had to repeat that 3 more times and try to pry up the frozen plug. Needless to say it's not the kind of thing you want to do unless you have a great signal. And EVERY time I did it I had a wheatie or injun.

Still though, would have been cool to get together with you guys. Next time it's warm we can come to your spot or you can come to ours. I know I wanna hit the camp in the spring for sure though. Hopefully all of those ginormous weeds will be gone and dead.
