What a shame it was so bad because it's a very rare mint error and was basically free being part of a bigger deal... which was only about $60. (Was told by one of the top collectors (maybe the top) it was only the second he has ever heard of) I had three collectors offering and the final price ended up at $1,100. Had this one been in a nice grade off to Stacks it would have went. She ain't pretty but I knew what I had right away and sure put a smile on my face.

It's a French 1711 "G" 30 Deniers/Musketeer. There was no such coin, or wasn't suppose to be. The correct mint mark for the Lyon mint was D, and that is what should have been on it. At first experts thought the example known was counterfeit, but after lots of consideration comparing dies they determined it to be genuine.

:o That was a good result :icon_thumleft:

Could the coin have come from the province of Dauhine were the Grenoble mint mark was "G" (and sometimes "Z")?
Don........
PS: Nice ID on a similar coin yesterday.

No, because Musketeers only have two different mint marks... (only made at two mints) D (Lyon) and AA (Metz) Back around that time there was a really good one on that I thought I had a chance at winning as it was somewhat hidden, and not listed to bring attention to the auction. It was actually a dug coin, but a very nice contempory counterfeit. I can't remember exactly what made ir special, but it was a good one Unfortunately I was the under bidder and my snipe was about $1,050. I still laugh at that one because it was probably only $80 going into the last minute so the seller (who had no idea) probably fell off his chair when at the 20 second mark it went to a few hundred, then shot to near $1,100 in the last 6 seconds.
