So day 2 of our long weekend was spent soothing our addiction. went to an old field really close to the village that still has the ridge and furrow lumps nd bumps across it. Having never searched here we were as ever excited himself especially as he loves finding the coins… (he has “Crusader complex” as I call it as I always tell him about Crusader’s amazing results) 😂 being near to a village his hopes were high!

But…. Only 3 coins came up… all toasted! But still a great day, another unusual Livery button.. lead bits, musket balls and the one lead thingy, and my absolute fav save of the day a horse shoe, much smaller than yesterdays (musket ball for scale). Also a couple of pics of the view, life doesn’t get better than being able to roam these fields xx

You rock. A quick google image search for both "medieval horseshoes" and "ancient horseshoes" finds quite a few of those really wide shoes, including some Roman horseshoes. Including one almost solid Roman shoe with just a very small center hole, from 3-4th century AD, sold in a UK auction. Good luck on a precise ID for those TWO that you found.

Funny.
Hopefully I'm helping & not throwing you off your game.
We have taken well over 20 years to get even half as good as we are now. I'm not accurately quoting the figures as Cru'dad has them on his database but we went from thinking that 50 Roman Coins a year in circa 2007 was good, to thinking that 50 a month was bad 6 or 7 years later. The last 10 years we have focussed on consistency, in fact I rocked the boat on Saturday because we were finding far too little when we should have been elsewhere. Many good choices becomes many tough choices.
If you can find that nearby Roman Site, settle down & grid the whole scatter of coins & objects that will produce other mixes of finds as well. Like I've said gridding the right places is the best way to go.

I don't want to put you off trying wherever you feel you should, great finds come from surprises places. My rule of thumb is that is you can still see the Medieval Ridge & Furrow then it hasn't been ploughed enough to bring up the older finds. Modern day farming that farmed out these lumps & bumps will produce the Medieval & Roman, these can only be seen on google earth on some timelines. Normally the oldest you're going to get is the Georgian, but this depends & can vary.

I'm only imparting knowledge & you guys can detect however makes you happy, it should be like fishing; enjoy the outdoor experience & wildlife, the catching is a bonus. Although I have less pictures of fish now & more like a mini museum.
