A "Pit" full of treasure!

Now this was just a fun dig all the way around. Although it was 90 degrees and the humidity was crazy high, Don and I made our way to the bottom and all the way to our treasure :icon_pirat:

Started out early in the morning to try and beat the heat :icon_sunny:, made it thru the first pit with nothing to show except what it looks like to be in an actual privy. The ash line was very clear to see. The only thing we found was leftover coal and ash. >:( Oh well, we move on and hope for something better

Onto the the next pit and on a totally different property on the other side of town. We found a pit in this yard within a minute or two after arriving. About 50 feet from the back door. Typical for inner city pits. So we started out by digging up all the overburden, rocks, bricks and pieces of sidewalk cement. And then below that the bottles started popping like spring mushrooms :headbang:

Don came up with a nice blob beer and then I found the Warners Safe Cure. We continued with several other patent medicines, and some small creamers. So we ended up with several good keepers. We were exhausted and in need of a gallon of water. :o

Along with the pictures of these most recent digs I added a few that we had dug on the same property but just now got around to cleaning them up. I think the cool find was the tangled mess of wire which had 5 insulators still attached. I really don't know much about insulators but I thought these were crude and archaic with no threads. Just a neat color that catches the eye. The green Stafford Ink was also a nice color. So we were blessed with another batch of old bottles and other goodies. Can't wait to get back out and get some more ;D Be safe out there and be sure to take water with ya, it's freaking hot out there :tongue3:  I hope ya don't get sick of all these pictures :laughing9: jgas

Re: A "Pit" full of treasure!

Some dig. Congradulations on all the finds....

Re: A "Pit" full of treasure!

Interesting insulators. Could it be the copper wire is worth more than the rest of the finds?

Re: A "Pit" full of treasure!

Just curious, but what do you estimate the total value of those bottle finds is? I know some of those older bottles can bring surprising $$$ amounts. :dontknow:

Re: A "Pit" full of treasure!

My GOD, It looks like indiana jones raided your yard, and you had an archealogical dig.

That much work should pay off.

What are you detecting with that you picked up that deep?

Impressive collection

Re: A "Pit" full of treasure!

oh my goodness! How do you even begin to know WHERE to dig? Those are amazing bottles. Congratulations.

Re: A "Pit" full of treasure!

What a rush!

Re: A "Pit" full of treasure!

Killer glass, love the ink's and cobalt

Re: A "Pit" full of treasure!

WOW! some really great bottles.

Re: A "Pit" full of treasure!

I dig your digs brother :icon_thumleft:

I've never seen an inslulator like those before. Any idea on how old they are?

Good thing for all this rain we've been having here in our neck of the woods. I'm sure it makes digging a whole lot easier for you guys.

Be safe and can't wait for the next great pit dig finds.

DJH

Re: A "Pit" full of treasure!

wow!! I don't pretend to be a bottle person but those look spectacular to me. nice digs!

Re: A "Pit" full of treasure!

lots of digging to get those...they cleaned up supper too! :icon_thumright:

Re: A "Pit" full of treasure!

Hey thanks for all the great replies everyone. It was a great time. A bit tough in the heat but well worth it. As far as the insulators goes I am really a novice on these. I have never seen any like it before so maybe they are worth something :dontknow:

In regards to the amount of $$$ in these bottles, well I suppose they are worth what someone would pay :tongue3:

But really, most of these would get a few $$ and then there are the more desirable ones like the Warners Safe Cure and some of the color inks. The Stafford might get some pretty good cash and the blob beers are always a good sale here locally. To tell ya the truth I just really love the history behind some of these bottles. The stories of the medicine, beer and wine companies back then is really quite amazing. Whats more amazing is that some of these tonics are still being used today in a roundabout way, mostly because they were full of alcohol :laughing9:

Maybe the best find in the bunch will be the insulators, who knows! jgas

Re: A "Pit" full of treasure!

Wow, great post as usual. Great variety of finds there jgas. The insulators are pretty cool. Good luck on the next pit, be safe.

Re: A "Pit" full of treasure!

hey jgas,
other than the obvious sunken hole or exposed stone, what's a telltale sign of anold hole. are you probing? is that whats in your hand?
im trying to find the hole out behind my parents old place and i'm having a heck of a time.
i see you have identified the hole inthe first pic but i see no visual indicators from this end of the line.
beautiful bottles and thanks for sharing!
