A piece of glass made into a scraper by a native??

Hi guys,

Got a weird one here if it is what I think it might be. Now it is incredibly hard to tell from the pictures, but in my opinion, one edge of this piece has been flaked into a scraper. It appears to have been flaked on both sides along one entire edge. I do not think it is natural or coincidental as the other edge looks like a normal glass break. Could this glass be that old, and could it have been made into a tool by a native? Thanks for looking guys, all comments appreciated.

Im not positive but I am not sure if they had the clear glass back then

I am doubting that it was knapped by the pre European peoples here. As Rock has mentioned, clear glass would not have been common during the contact period, as clear glass was usually flint glass, and was one of the more expensive types at that time. I can not tell what type of glass vessel your piece came from, but it appears to have been in a fire and partially melted? The chipping on the edge does look to be more than just a clean break though, not much more I can say without seeing it in person? HH

Yea, good point. In my haste, I didn't think of that. When did clear glass come about? It's just so weird to me because I found it along with a ton of scrapers today and it has a flaked edge just like the rest of them. I guess it has to be coincidence.

I have seen in my searches where Native Americans utilized glass and if you found it with other scrapers you should hang on to it IMO. I have found slag glass in the same area as artifacts. If it was a good spot to camp anyone would desire the spot.

i think the 1880's is the earliest that piece of clear glass from a mass produced bottle could be, and i doubt it is that old.

The few artifacts that I have seen made of glass were all black glass or an olive color. I also do not think clear glass was available during the contact period other than pane glass for windows. All the 1880's and earlier bottles that I have in my collection have some type of color or tint to them.

It looks broken and partially melted to me.
Like was mentioned bottle glass that old wouldn't have been clear
