A PHOTO FABLE

Well, Iā€™m new to the Photography/Imaging Forum . Iā€™ve read some of your post here ,and like of the rest of T-Net there seems to be many helpful people here ,..... I should have came here earlier ! Yes , should have asked for some help earlier , but NOOOO..... not me ,... for Iā€™m a special kind of idiot , .....Iā€™ll explain .
Iā€™m going to start my story a little further back then I originally thought , it will let you see where Iā€™m coming from , if thatā€™s at all possible !! Let alone where Iā€™m going with this !!
My wife bought a H.P All-In-One printer ,fax , scanner , copier [2610 xi] about 4 yrā€™s ago. Itā€™s a good unit ,comes with some good soft-ware that you can update free on line, maybe fairly common anymore? I believe she did good by choosing it , she has scanned all her familyā€™s photoā€™s , and burned C.D.ā€™s for all , good job !!! Then about a year ago [X-mas ā€˜07] I bought a Sony Cyber-Shot 1080 H.D. , 7.2 M.P., it has macro, that was a must . Itā€™s a nice little camera ,easy to take on hunts ,events ,etc. as it will even fit into a large pocket . I have taken some nice picā€™s with it , have even received a few nice compliments here on T-net about some picā€™s . But Iā€™ve also taken some bad picā€™s as well ,.. Need to pick up some new ā€œpointersā€on indoor shoots , all in good time .
So ,. Now I have my All-In-One printer with itā€™s soft-ware [H.P. image-zone] where I can send my picā€™s from my little camera . I can from my puter flip, slice ,dice and even resize my picā€™s , I can even order prints for 12 cents ea. , and they will be done in 2 hrā€™s , Photography today can be so easy , [key word CAN] . Alright , Iā€™m good up to here , fairly easy learning curve , in-fact I feel good about what Iā€™ve accomplished ,....so far !
O.K. now , I have known about this treasure for years , but havnā€™t given it much thought , until I started playing with my little camera and picā€™s on the puter , now it hasnā€™t been seen for nearly 30 years , I even knew where this treasure laid ,...... it was upon a shelf at my parents house !!

Six reels of 35mm slides and some Photo-albums , and some odds and ends to boot . All from my familyā€™s life in Australia from ā€˜72-ā€˜77 and ā€œyesā€ it really has been close to 30 yrā€™s since they have been last viewed .
Now , as Iā€™ve said my wife has done all her familyā€™s photoā€™s , there wasnā€™t any slides . I had over 600 of them to scan , I asked around a bit [could have asked here ?] . I had even been told you can do a good job with your printer , with a frame made from pop-sickle sticks !! But , with a bit of research I decided to get a scanner , they [some] have a holder for 35mm film [neg.] and 35mm slides , there is a mirror behind this ā€œholderā€ , so I donā€™t really know how well a printer would do at this task ? Anyway I bought a H.P. scanjet G3010 for $80 ,comes with all the soft-ware for film ,good to go . Maybe , Iā€™m not such an idiot , .... .maybe ?
At the speed of life , I put the slides into the puter , I was about 2 months at this task . Now , it only took me about 1 Ā½ hrā€™s per reel [apx. 100 slides ] but with kids , the holidays etc. it took me about 2 months . Now itā€™s been about 2 weeks since my ā€œproblemā€ started ,... or better said that I realized I had a problem . As I remember , one night I was going to edit some of the photograph scans , they where stored with some of the other scans in ā€œH.P. Document Viewerā€ I figured no problem , just click , click and send them to H.P. image zone ,.... right ...!! Apparently ,... it just doesnā€™t work this way...???... So , I tried to send them via my documents [my pic,s , my scans , etc. ] and through my desktop ,... no luck ,of course ! Now , I sent a ā€œfewā€ New-Folders with my scans ā€œ somewhereā€ , ... before I started launching some New-Folders with small pay-loads just to see where or what I could hit , .. Iā€™ve done this before, Just trying to figure thing out ,.. Apparently,...it just doesnā€™t work this way.... either !! Now , with my scan files a bit scattered about , I decided to do it as one of the H.P. programs ā€œsuggestā€ , by burning a C.D.,then reinstall to H.P image-zone ,... Hay!!, I told yā€™all Iā€™m an idiot ,... .and a special one at that !!!
The hunt was on ,... for the well scattered scan files . I started on my Desk-Top ,all was clear . Moved on into My-Documents , as I tore through folders and files , I started finding my scans ,... I burned there little butts straight to that C.D. !! I was on a roll ,..... I moved on to Shared-Documents ,and I burn my last scanā€™s butt in my Wifeā€™s Documents,..I really enjoyed doing this !!
Along the way of this ā€œHuntā€ I found many Empty New-Folders ,...I smited them just for sport !!
So this is where Iā€™m at right now , C.D. is burned and reinstalled to H.P. image-zone ! My Parentā€™s brought over a few more slides [100 +/-]last week , from Hawaii , Fiji and New Zealand . Iā€™ve already scanned some , sent them straight to H.P. Image-zone ,.... this time ! Anyway , feeling good about what Iā€™ve accomplished ,....again ?? Oā€™ Yes , I did call this little story a fable didnā€™t I ? I do believe a fable calls for a morel or something at the end ? Hmmm ,... lets see if this fits , ...You can still do a good job , even being an idiot , just try not being to special at it .

Palm Valley ,Northern Territory [N.T.] Australia , a strange tropical oasis in the center of a desert , they believe much of Australia looked like this millions of years ago .
This slide was taken in ā€˜75 , the colors have held well in this time , the biggest condition issue for me was the dirt [filth ,seen best in sky] on the slides, more so on the slides from the reels ?

hongkong.jpg

Hong Kong
Not a big problem for me , these ā€œstore bought slides ā€œ have faded considerably in 30 yrā€™s , claimed to be made from Eastman Kodak Film , All are Family slides where made on Kodachrome , by Kodak , all in good condition , I think . Now , we have some Slides we bought in Alice Springs where we lived , shot by a local Photographer and sold in shops around town , great pic.ā€™s and in great condition , Old school when you put your name on it ,.. It meant something !

pigglywig.jpg

One other problem , Apparently the frame orientation on the slides , fount, back ,up , down
Really didnā€™t mean a hoot in the film lab . ...I worked here at the Ylggiw-Ylggip , .. stocking , bagging groceries even painted a few signs ,. ..didnā€™t last long ??

photoprob1.jpg

Now , I had more problems scanning photoā€™s then slides , first just getting them out of the albums . Then some [most ?] had a bit of a ā€œwarpā€ to them , they would move around a bit as you laid the lid on the scanner down , I cut a piece of clear plexi-glass to fit the scanner ,holds the photoā€™s in place , sometimes the scanner ā€œseeā€™sā€ the plexi-glass and tries to ā€œset-upā€ on nothing, not a big problem , maybe better to use a piece just a bit bigger then your photoā€™s , and stay with single scans.

mutiscan.jpg

Multi-scanā€™s , I believe there not the way to go , after the original scan you need to ā€œcrop/cutā€ them apart and ā€œsave - asā€ not a real time saver ,messes up [a bit] logging . Anyway , I figured out that a scan ā€œcutā€ from a multi-scan , of the same size and even larger then a single scan is of less quality , i.e. , a ā€œcutā€ scan of say 670x 670 is not as good as a single scan of 660x660 ,. I have examples , Iā€™ll throw them up here if you like .

Not all in Australia is scales and claws , they do have a few fuzzy cute ones , this is Josephine , with my litā€™ bro and big sis, and me , X-mas ā€˜76 ? Anyway , Josephineā€™s ā€œmumā€ was shot by the Aboriginal Tracker working for the Police-man [one] out in the Hartā€™s Range, his jurisdiction , about 15,000 sq. mile .

Wow!! Starting to sound like one of those hellish butt -numbing slide showā€™s from the 70's !!

Anyway , This is where Iā€™m at now , just need to make the finished C.D. for my family and one for a family of Cattle- men , [ranchers] down there ,....... No problem Mate !! Even an Idiot can do it,....right !!?

Thankā€™s Mate , Blindpig

Re: A PHOTO FABLE

Aren't those neg scanners awesome? I have an HP (I don't feel like going downstairs to find the model number!)...anyways, bought it about 5 years ago. Still works great! I have it on my PC now (XP) as it won't work with on my laptop (VISTA, which I do not like).

It came with a neg / slide attachment to scan film. However, I have so many 110 film and some 126 film negs that I can't scan. So....out of cardboard...I made an attachment to add to my neg scanner device and have been successful in scanning my 110 / 126 film. Now, the disc film...well....since they no longer develop those and being round, it won't fit on my scanner attachment....and I don't care to keep those...so I just sliced and diced and made a holder to put them on and scanned some.... this attachment is from a disc film.

I store all my photos on an external hard drive and I break down all my photos by surnames (I'm into genealogy, that's probably why...LOL)...and make folders for each surname and under the surnames, I list individuals.

I am in the market for a new scanner I can use on my laptop (VISTA)...but I am so very picky. I like to buy my stuff from B&H Photo (New York City)....you can search them on the net....fantastic customer service, great delivery time period and the prices are fair! Anyways...never had a problem with them.

I love using Picture Publisher, Paint Shop Pro, Picture It!, and a few other programs when cleaning up photos. I never save over my original photo. I always save my photo that I am working as a new file name.... (i.e., IMG 1345.JPG ...I would rename IMG 1345a.JPG...etc etc etc.)

And for scanning....if you can save as a .TIFF extension...you will get a better quality of photo...however, you can't post or email .TIFF files...so when I scan...I save as a .TIFF and if I want to send or post a photo...I resave that .TIFF photo under a new file name and as a .JPG/.JPEG

You did great and I love hearing folks perserving their family memories!!!!

Re: A PHOTO FABLE

Ron and Anne , Yeah , scanning really has been fun , just take'n my time , no dead lines and the patient's of an oyster . When you made your holder for your larger neg.'s did you put a mirror behind , is it needed ? I agree about the old family stuff/geneology , are family geno. goes back to 1340 ? +/- in Denmark , of Queen's and pirate's ,... but not at the same time !!
O.K. Mrs Oroblonco ,..... That was quick , I re-scanned a bunch of 'em ! I'm sure there are a bunch more needed to be done, I'll play with H.P. a bit more ,see if I can do it
Thanks ,Blindpig

No....the scanner I use has an attachment for scanning negs and slides. It came with it holders for slides and 35mm. I just took the 35mm holder as a base for the outside size to fit in the attachment and then cut the inside so the neg would view. I've never used a mirror before. Did your scanner come with an attachment to put your negs / slides in to scan? If not, you did great job!!!!

That's cool on your Denmark roots. My great grandfather was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, but have had no luck on finding anything out on him. Was told he was like 20 yrs older than my great grandmother, he was supposedly a sailor of sort, merchant sailor. Don't know when he moved to New York and can't find him on the 1920 census records. Don't even know when he went back to Denmark. I know my grandmother was born in 1915 in Brighten Beach, New Jersey...so it had to be after that, of course! LOL...I was told he wanted to go back to Denmark, but my great grandmother did not (she was born in Ireland), so my grandmother and great uncle were raised in New York City by my great grandmother. I don't know if they ever saw their father again. I know my great uncle Carl was a real sour puss and was so mean to my great grandmother, blaming her for his father leaving. So, that's part of the family history I will never know the truth about...they are all gone, my father included...grandson to Jens Christensen (my great grandfather). My great uncle was born in 1912 in Pennsylvania....and searching for Jens Christensen is like searching for John Brown or John Smith!!! UGH!!!

And if my research is correct....and if the old tradition held true when my great grandfather was born....his father's first name could have been Christen. I know "sen" is "son of" and "dau" is "daughter of"....so had my grandmother been born in Denmark and the old tradition held true...her surname would have been Alice Gertrude Christendau???

Re: A PHOTO FABLE

Ron and Ann , like to say I feel your pain , hitting those dead-ends , but are family genealogy has already been done for us !! On my Fathers side, the 1340 Danes and even on his Momā€™s side ,the Irish- mutā€™s side , it goes back to 17?? In Virginia . On my Momā€™s side ,.. Nutā€™n . But like the wall you hit with Jenā€™s Christen , I have a story ....
My Great -Grandparents settled in N.W. Iowa , anyway Inwood held itā€™s100th anniversary about 15 yrā€™s ago they had a book printed with some history and old stories and such . One of these stories was about the ā€œcomplaintsā€ from the Post-Master /Mail-Man ? About all the ā€œJohnsonā€™sā€ out on Post-route 3 [?] , there was about 8 of ā€˜em !! All next door to each other , they whernā€™t all related ether !! Anyway I had known that my Great-Grandpa had changed his name to his Motherā€™s maiden name , way back when . Now , my Uncle showed me a ā€œPlateā€ book dated 1906 he had bought , it showā€™s all the land parcleā€™s with owners names . There it was ,in black and white , momā€™s farm ā€œJ . Johnson ā€œ . Just like out of that scene in ā€œBlazing Saddlesā€ , with all there ā€œJohnsonā€™sā€

There you go ,. Blindpig
