We took a family walked tonight down the creek and found a nice size garnet sitting on the ground

Pretty cool to eyeball a marble like that. Nice color and clarity. Bound to be a few more around. Garnet likes to build up in deposites like gold does... heck I pull it out in my pan often enough. The fact that its not all busted up may indicate a good source nearby.

As far as rains go in our area we very rarely see much rain. We did however get a really good down pour about a month ago or so. Which is typically how it goes around here, hardly see the wet stuff but when we do, its a decent amount and a very short time.

Nice find Ash. Your area and the surrounding mountains are full of garnets. I got the below from Nuevo while looking for tourmaline. It's one of my favorite finds.

I figured since you found a Garnet that size sitting on top of the ground; it was probably washed down by some good flow of water.

Wow, nice find! I've pulled a bunch tiny garnet shards from the creeks here in NC but nothing that size.
