Hello all!

I’ve been lurking here for about a week now (since I got my first metal detector)

For about 5 years now I had been chomping at the bit to go detecting around where I live. I finally broke down last week and bought a Garrett Ace 150

I’ve only been out about 3 times, but I am sooooo addicted. Do they have an "anon” group? Something like MDA or DA? lol

I’m pretty excited to share my loots story with you all. I’ve read some amazing stories and seen some pretty awesome finds. This group seems like such a wonderful bunch of people! Can't wait to get to know you all better!

Anyway, on my first day out, just around my house and deeded access to the lake I found a 1995 Canadian nickel and 2 - 1964 quarters (silver). I was pretty stoked about that.
Where I had to dig them is really mucky. It stays wet here even through draughts in most of the area. It didn’t matter though, cause I wanted so much to find silver and I did!

The next day I went to my little place I have been chomping at the bit to get to. I went with a friend and she walked our dogs while I detected (she doesn’t believe anyone can find anything…like finding a needle in a haystack) So, while we we're walking (fast I might add) I was cherry picking cause I was with the most impatient person in the world, my detector did the coin ding!
I found a bicentennial quarter….

Over the next couple of days I had to get work done while the weather was holding up, but I wanted to go back to my area so badly. Work done, yesterday I take the day off and finally go there. It’s about a mile walk and I would have done some detecting along the way, but I had it in my mind where I wanted to start and I wanted to save on batteries (I have no idea how long they’ll last) I made a fast walk to where I wanted to be. While walking I was doing some praying to the detector Gods and Goddesses and wishing that I'd find something really cool, since this would probably be the last day till spring that I’d be able to go (winter is coming in a big way today). I got there and detected about 4 hours just digging up junk, a bronze thingy, an old national distillers cap and ammo cartridges that I thought were from present times, but I kept them anyway(Turns out they’re from around the turn of the century), some pennies, a couple of dimes, a button and a lead thing.

About the last hour I walked up a path that leads to the old farmhouse and it’s out buildings. This place was built about the 1830’s and covers almost 300 acres. So, sorta in between the old out building and the big house I got a coin ding…Ya know, I wasn’t at all prepared for this venture cause I brought a semi busted spade I pretty much wrecked this summer doing my gardening and getting worse while I was digging the stuff there. It worked though, cause about 4” down in between to palm size rocks I find an 1837 large cent. Sure, she isn’t pretty…but wow I was sooo excited! I even had to call my friend at work to say “nana, I found a bla, bla, bla, so there!” She was pretty amazed too.

Just guess who’s searching on eBay now for a metal detector? Hehe I guess I’ll have a detecting buddy this coming spring.

Could this be the “needle in the haystack?”
I’d have to say I doubt it. I just know I’ll find more there.
A guy built the old house in the 1830’s, 9 years later sold it to a farmer, then his family sold it to some rich family that turned it into a country resort in the 20’s.

Yesterday was the last day out I fear, till spring anyway.
But, what a note to end on eh?
I can’t wait till next spring!

Oh yeah, I almost forgot the funniest/weirdest part!
So, on the way home, about ½ way I was thinking, “I need an old toothbrush. Geez, I don’t have a spare and I’d like to clean the coin. I need a tooth brush…hummm, what am I going to do?”
I get to where I cut through a neighbors yard (another deeded access. I had to go through there “on the way” to my spot) and I spy a darn toothbrush. And, honest to god it was standing upright, balancing, brush end down in the grass, handle pointing straight up just as big and bold as can be and right in my path!
Brand new one too…and mind you the neighbors only come to their house here on the weekends. So, why in the heck was it there and how the heck did I miss it on the way to my spot?
I was like…what the??? LOL

When I make a darn wish, I have GOT to start wishing BIGGER!!! LOL

Anyway, here are my finds...

I have said before and I will say it again. Welcome to the addiction of Treasure hunting! I have only been swinging mine for a few short months and have made , in my opinion, some pretty spectacular finds.
Best of luck and welcome to Tnet.
DREAM BIG!

WoW, that large penny is actually in pretty good condition! Nice detail on the back!

Way to Go!

Alchemy, welcome and congrats on the great finds. You are off to an amazing start...silver, large cent and the discovery that you can make your wishes come true! Do me a favor? Wish for the snow to melt early this year so we can both get back out there....I'm feeling the need to feed MY addiction, too!

lol...ok, but I'll do one better, How about I wish for it NOT to snow at all! (hey, dreaming is free)

Thank you all for the warm welcome.

I know I'll be out there every day (weather permiting) this coming spring, since I think I found a really sweet spot. Like I said, I just had this gut feeling over the past years that someone needed to get out there detect that area. I don't think it's been detected at all in fact. If any, very little. I'll be going a little crazy this winter...errr, crazier that is!

your off to a great start. its iced over here and the weathermans calling for a foot of snow today sp I agree COME ON SPRING.

Oh, I've been watching the weather for MO.
Wow, that's some weird weather pattern you're having. 64 here (MI) yesterday and colder in TX and MO? That's just weird ???

It's still about 50 here, but raining (constant) so I wont be going out.
As for after the snow and freezing temps...umm, only way anyone would find anything here would be if someone just dropped some coinage or jewelry in the snow. So, yeah maybe where people slide and play it'd be an ok idea to hit....

Alchemy,

Great large cent you have there. That site you have access to I'm sure will produce more great finds for you. You know the history of the site and where the buildings are now you just have to hit it hard. With a site like that you will gte a lot of nails I bet but the rewards will be worth it. I know how you feel about having to wait until spring. I usually have the same chomping at the bit to get out there problem, but mine is my wife whom I have to coax her into letting me go for a couple of hours on days off. Maybe even just take a wlak around the area before the snows fall (unless it is too late) and scan the ground. I got my second large cent this way, just laying on top....no digging!

Anyway congrats on the great find and best of luck to you come spring

Alchemy, you are my new hero! I've got an Ace 250 and I'm finding pretty cool stuff, but not that cool yet! I found a Indian Head penny (1906) a couple of weeks ago. It sounds like you have found a really sweet spot there. Ain't that the way it goes, you find something really awesome and the weather turns on you. It'll be spring again before too long...

HH,

Welcome to the forum...and metal detecting! I've only been at it about 6 months, I have an ACE 250. In that 6 months I have found some pretty cool things including a 1851 Large Cent.

You're my hero...a large cent! :o Man would I love to dig one soon!

Oh, congrats on the toothbrush find! lol!

I hope to leave the fine state of Michigan sometime soon myself. I'm shooting for the CW areas down south or Upstate NY.

Best to you.

Badger

Welcome, New myself to the forums..looks like you started out very well...congrads and hope to see more....Zach

Thanks you guys!

I'll be here alot now cause I have to live vicariously though the people who can metal detect all year long…lol

Badger, where approx in MI?
Next spring after my partner gets bored with the metal detecting (and I know that'll happen...lol), I know I'll be looking for some people to hunt with.
I wont be moving back to WI for about another year, like later in fall of next year.

Hiya Alchemy,

Welcome to T-NET and the wonderful world of detecting. Seems you are on the right track with your current finds...congratulations. Happy Hunting. ;D

Well, if that's really you in your picture my wife would shoot me as soon as you stepped out of the car! lol!

We're up either on Mackinac Island or near the bridge at another residence. Sometimes we live at the corp. owned house downstate so we travel all over.

I'm called a "professional" so I can live pretty much where I want. From what I'm hearing from my buddies in the south I'm really getting the itch to move down yonder. I think I could really get into crawdads. Man, you wouldn't believe what some of these guys are digging. One buddy digs at least 3 union buttons every time he goes out! Digging 20 3-ringers is nothing for them.

Metal detecting is an uncontrollable passion with me. It's really way more than a hobby.

At this point though a detecting partner just wouldn't work for me in this state. I travel so much and have to grab off a little THing here and there.

By the way, did you dig that large cent in Michigan?

Alchemy....A big warm welcome from the Woodsman in Northeastern PA. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Glad to hear about you addiction. ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)We all suffer from it by finding too many pull tabs......Again..WELCOME...And Happy Hunting
