Well Baldingboy and I decided to sneak out and hunt tonight. We went to a new place I had located and found junk.

Returned to a place where BB and I had hunted before that he got permission for us to hunt and had a fun time.

I found this necklace. It looks like this is the whole necklace. I found it all in the same hole. It looks like it has bronze finish?

So my question is has anyone seen anything like this and how old is it??

Looks Asian, but as far as more than that, can't help.

That looks like a Chinese or Japanese Carp, a bouquet of flowers and 'the golden fleece'
All suggest a 'charm' type necklace.
Interesting find/s

I would agree that both the carp and Golden Fleece are symbols of good luck. However, the head/snout of the carp (?) appears more like that of the classical fish-like dolphin, as shown below. The charm with flowers could actually be a cornucopia, also symbolic of good fortune and plenty. The fourth charm looks as if it might be a sort of stylized scroll.

ME22, at what type of place did you find this? I don't see anything amazing, just unusual. Somebody lost a necklace, albeit a neat necklace... you might find the history and owner yet...

Glad the two of you got out! Keep diggin' ... :-*

The house dates back to early 1800s. The owner says he nor his family lost any jewelry there.

We have found lots of wheat pennies some from the teens, a couple of mercs a silver war nickel, lots of tootsie toys, etc etc etc

I think it is pretty amazing when you dig something like this up from 4 inches and you find the little links that hold the charms on. Maybe amazing is too strong a word, I originally posted Cool and I like that description.

It's cool.

It's probably not very old either. I just cannot find anything out about it after several hours of research.

Y'know, that last picture looked at first like a very stylized cat, but on a second look, doesn't it have horns? Like a ram? If so, then it almost looks art nouveau - around the 1920s.

That was opinion only, btw. I honestly have no clue.

good luck!

asian styling copper / bronze charm necklace jewelry item --maybe art nouveau -- foreign items were popular back then and were thought of as stylish -- asian and egyptian items esp.

This necklace is super cool. Probably the BEST thing we have found in quite some time. I am thinking 1920's as well, but that is just guess. No matter what...an awesome (enviable) find for sure. Congrats again.

Thats what we thought at first but I am pretty sure it's a lady's necklace.

But it could be a pocket watch chain. Did they routinely have charms like this?

It is a Ram a Fish, what I am thinking is a cornucopia (thanks to BB and others) and something that looks like an oriental lantern with a scroll in the middle. The chain is VERY heavy made so that is why I am not ruling out the pocket watch idea.

I love this find and think its fantastic.....After studying it for a few days,I would date it in the 40's or 50's,based on the clasp.its called a springring....

Nick

Sorry if I caused you cranial matter trauma!!!

I would tend to agree with your assessment, and others on here. I don't think it is all that old. 50-60 years is a good guess on range of age.

I don't know that I will ever get it exactly pinned down but you and the others here helped quite a bit.

Thanks

The ram, as depicted, is a classic representation of the mythological Golden Fleece.

The Golden Fleece (Fr. Toison d'or) owes its celebrity to the classical fable of Jason's expedition to Colchis in the ship Argo to obtain it. This fleece gave name to the very celebrated order of knighthood in Spain and Austria, and was afterwards borne by certain families.

PBK I remember the Story of Jason quite well. I had a teacher when I was younger that LOVED Greek mythology. We studied it for a whole year.

I thought about the ram and the fleece when I first looked at it and I didn't think a cornucopia was oriental in nature but I am not able to ID it so I am willing to take whatever help I can get.

Thanks

One other thing, the fact that a hundred other people haven't come on here and said "I found one just like that" makes me feel a little better about my rating it as one of my COOLEST finds ever!!!!

I'm easy to please really.
