Detector(s) used
Presently mental, not metal
Found this item on a small portion of beach on the Virginia side just past the Nice Bridge . . . Originally I was thinking it was part of a turtles shell because it has a slight curve to it, but a few people don’t think it is & are unsure what it may be :icon_scratch: . .

It has a deep brown, ??? Bronze ??? , coloring to it with swirls & weave like copper going through it
Outside, top portion, is very smooth, a shine to it
Inside, under portion, smooth as well but rougher, no shine
6 inches long, 4 inches wide, maybe a little more then 1/2 inch wide
Swirl patterns & “weave” seem to go through the entire piece
Magnets do not stick to it . . . Weighs about a pound ( hand guesstimate )

Don’t pay no mind to the dates on the pictures, I am camera challenged :-[ , which explains the kind & amount of pictures I am including . . .

Thank you so very much for looking at my mystery piece! I am grateful for all suggestions, thoughts & ideas! :D

Broken ship's bell?

Just guessing...

To me it looks like a section of an "exploded" cannon ball.
Litewings :icon_pirat:

That would have been my guess

does your metal detector go beep beep when you go over it? You never mentioned if it was metal or not. :icon_scratch:

:icon_sunny: Thank you so very much for the wonderful responses & thoughts ~ Thank You EVERYONE ~ !

bigcypresshunter ~ you asked if the item was metal . . . I really do not think it is, thou my only form of testing was a magnet & comparing it to various metal objects around me . . . I pulled out the metal detector & it doesn’t go beep when passing over the item :icon_scratch:

trikikiwi ~ I love that pattern! My eyes are always drawn to the areas that have that “weave” . . . My brother thinks it is “fiberglass”, but I am leaning toward a tortoise shell . . . I wonder too if it is not some sort of fossil ??? . . . Calvert Cliffs is not that far of a drive from were we reside, so I am hoping one day soon to venture to the Calvert Marine Museum & possibly I can inquire there if they have any clue what this may be . . .

Montana Jim ~ petrified? I had not thought about that before! But would something that is petrified have a “coppery shine” ? ???

mojjax ~ ambergris / whale puke? :o Now wouldn’t that be something! I tried sniffing the piece, got caught by Hub who quite cautiously backed out of the room as proclaiming my actions are always confirming the need for me to start seeking help :tongue3: . . . Anyhow I was unable to detect any scent . . .

Yesterday I attempted to get some better pix when the sun was out, hoping to show the “swirls” “coppery shine” “patterns” a bit better . . .

:D

I agree that it is biological. From the curvature of it possibly part of a petrified stingray???

OT for just a sec...the "nice" bridge. What, there's an ugly bridge there too?

Back OT - looks like worm patterns on it. The swirly shapes I mean.

My guess is that this is a piece of Native American pottery. I also live in VA and have found a few pieces of similar coloured pottery shards. The textures on the piece would have been pressed into the clay while wet using such items as textiles. I used to have a couple of nice shards but I gave them to one of my college art professors five years ago.
