Primary Interest:
Beach & Shallow Water Hunting
Exercise 14 hours/week (2 full days) preferably on the beach.

The exercise plan will include constant body movement including but not limited to; walking, running, kneeling, standing, crouching, swiveling and digging all while you carry in your arms 8 lbs of weights.

Exercise plan may include water aerobics, which will include all of above except in cold chest-high water. Water aerobics may require additional weights (30 lb weight belt).

Exercise Regimen will include;
1. digging/shoveling about 3.4 tons of sand, rock and shells per week
(assumes 15 digs/hr, 2 scoops/dig, 16 lbs/scoop inc scoop weight, 1 scoop = 170cu in, sand weight 120lbs/cu ft).

2. Swinging 4 lb "wand" across front of body every 4 seconds or 1 cycle/8 seconds; or 6,300 times/wk. You may change hands when necessary.

3. Carry 4 lb weight in non-wanding hand.

4. Optional: You may carry additional weights on hips or on back for extra credit/calories burned.

Calories Burned:

Previous reports have indicated that metal detecting, in general, burns about 250 calories/hr. This would compare to 350 calories/hr in a brisk walk on sand and 560 calories/hr doing the same in water. You burn about 400/hr digging holes, However, I doubt these previous reports included all aspects of MDing. For example, they may have simply added the miles walked and failed to include added calories burned swinging the detector or carrying the heavy sand scoop or digging the stubborn holes. So to be on the fair side, we'll assume the exercise plan generates a burn of 325 calories/hr. Thus each week, if you follow this rigorous exercise plan, you will burn 4,550 calories/wk or burn enough fat to lose 1.26 lbs/wk.
